The short answer to that is: it doesn't. I've come across several online retailers of vape juice that offer glass bottles and have very reasonable prices. mount baker Vapor is the most recent one I've been browsing and their prices beat the local shops by far (I just bought 10ml for $7.99...never again). I'm sure there's a list of online retailers that the folks here at ECF have had positive experiences with, and I suggest looking into that to see what you may find!

Edit: To answer the question in the OP, I've definitely felt awkward in vape shops. Part of my "problem" is that I want to try every darn flavor they have and feel like I'm being a nuisance. My rule is that if I linger and taste a bunch of flavors and take up the salesperson's time, I'll buy at least one 10ml of my favorite. I understand that it has to be frustrating for them to take the time to assist customers with trying out every flavor under the sun only for them to walk out empty-handed, so I try to avoid being "that guy".

Don't worry about being 'that guy' if they didn't want people to try their samples then shouldn't offer free samples. Most places have a bar, and if you tell em you just want to try some stuff, and you'll let them know when you find something, they'll usually leave you alone for a while and you can just sit there in front of a rack of atomizers and try flavours until your heart's content. Most places have high mark up on their juices, so they're making a killing and aren't worried about you sampling everything. Now if you do find something you like, it's probably best to buy it there, rather than go try to find it cheaper online.

As for juice, I judge by the quality of the juice, not by the bottle. But their are some higher end juices that come in fancy glass bottles, and there's definitely a markup for that aspect of it. (like buying liquor) But then you just have to decide if the quality of juice is worth the price. sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I vape Alice in Vapeland juice almost exclusively. they come glass bottles (and adorable shipping parcels) but their prices are pretty reasonable. I believe it's like $12 for a 15ml bottle. I could find juice for cheaper yes, but the quality of the juice makes me feel that $12 for 15ml is a bargain... especially since I know those glass bottles are more expensive.

Same here... I won't even go to my favorite place unless I actually have the money to buy at least one bottle, because it's such a nice, friendly place, and the owner is so kind and patient and fun to talk to, I really don't want to waste his time unless I *know* I'm going to buy something. And he knows I never spend much, but I've never come out of there without buying at least *something* no matter how inexpensive. But he runs good deals just about all the time, the last time it was 2 bottles of the Hard Rock Vapor e-liquid (normally $14.99 each at the B&M) for $25 -- so that was a really good deal, and I got 2 -- and they're about the best juices I've tried yet.

A regular customer in the local shop I most recently visited mentioned them adding a juice bar. Currently they have a setup like what you mentioned, but it is operated by an employee. It's positioned so that I'd feel awkward reaching to the rack (it's oriented so that the back is customer facing) to try out a flavor myself. I hope they do add a juice bar like what you mentioned, though I have to wonder how that could impact their shrink. I'd like to believe that customers in this community wouldn't steal tanks, but there can always be a couple of sketchy apples in every basket.

Alice in Vapeland? Well, as a fan of Alice in Wonderland in general you have certainly piqued my interest! Fancy glass bottles aren't what I had in mind when I said that it wasn't worth the markup. I was thinking about something very similar in form to the plastic bottles commonly used, and I haven't seem a big markup on any of the online retailers I've snuck a peek at. If a glass bottle is fancy and can be used in a decorative sense, then I'd say a few extra dollars could be worth it. I do hope that, even with pretty bottles, people are extra careful about keeping the juice out of the hands of small children and pets! :)

Ah yes, I understand about the reaching over the counter to grab test tanks. And as for shrink ( I see someone worked retail :D ) most sample bars use cheap CE4 clearos so even if someone pocketed a few, it would be no big loss.

I too am a HUGE Alice in Wonderland fan. That's what initially drew me to AiV. But once I tried her juice, I knew I would stay in Vapeland forever. You should certainly check them out and give them a try. You can only order from them 12p tuesday-12p wednesday though. The rest of the week the portal is closed for orders. But Alice's juice is certainly worth the wait.
You should also stop by the Tea Table Thread to say hello to the other Vapelandians.

I feel you, I myself have been working in a vape shop for over a year and a half and I DON'T feel comfortable in A LOT of shops. I am use to the atmosphere in my shop we try to make everyone feel comfortable. Its hard to help people if they can't open up to you. I typically don't even go into other shops just to avoid talking to all the cloud chaser... or the Know it alls.... Just stick it out I know there are a lot of shops out there that are into helping people instead of looking "COOL"

Just got back from a local vape shop I had never been in. We asked about flavors available and the young lady behind the counter handed us a book with the flavor listings.

Wife asked if she could try one flavor and was told that they do not do flavor testing. Said they had 80 different juices and didn't want to keep samples for each.

Well, thank you and have a nice day! Went back to our regular place!

that's really dumb. how were their prices on juice? if you can't sample em, you might as well order online.

you might try to go back in a few months... I bet they'll change that and start offering samples. if they don't want to fill 80 tanks. then maybe they can just a couple of drippers and mech mods for sampling and buy a box of disposable drip tips.

I always walk into a shop with a killer mod like my Swan SS18650 or my ELA and wait to see if any one behind the counter knows what I have. If not I turn around and walk out. Because they have no clue what vaping it all about and can not help me.

That's a little elitist don't you think? My favorite shop, as an example, had never seen a ProVari before I walked in, although they had heard of them, but the owner and both employees knew more about rare mechanicals than anybody else I've ever met. They would have passed your little test with flying colors. There are so many options and devices out there, I just can't help feeling that judging someone on not recognizing one mechanical mod is pretty harsh. Heck, before looking them up just now I couldn't have done more than nod and say "nice mechanical" and I can recognize lots of them.

And, glad that you would... I have know idea what a 'Swan' is, other than a mech mod, nor should I. Know why i could tell every single mech out there by looks.. especially if its in your hand... your loss though.

I do most of my buying online because the prices seem better and it's easier to reasearch prices and reviews. I've been to a few shops in Chicago. One that's on my way home from work has some seemingly friendly people working there and a good selection of juice, but they tried to push some total crap hardware on me until they realized I knew what I wanted. They don't do it any more. Also, the place is tiny and usually filled with vapor. Just because it's not smoke doesn't mean it's entirely pleasant to be engulfed by a mixed bag of juice smells. A Smoke Eater would really clean up the place (maybe a Vape Eater?). There are also some people who just hang at the sample bar like they own the place. So, yes I've felt uncomfortable in a vape shop.

There are many others I haven't visited yet, so I still believe there's a place I might like. I'm just not hyped on the idea of brick-and-morter shop when online buying is cheap and easy.

This is circa 1980, history repeating itself. At the time it was called a "computer store", and on the table was an Apple II computer with 48k RAM, a 120kb 5.25 inch floppy disk drive, green screen monitor and an Epson MX-80 dot matrix printer for $3,000. You'd find either a couple of geeky computer hobby guys running it, or people who didn't know anything about it, but dressed fairly well given the price you were going to pay for one. Computer stores were popping up everywhere, some going from zero to $15M in sales in a very short period of time. But then the market began to mature, shake out, and consolidate quickly.

The retail and online parts of the vape industry will mature, transition and consolidate. The vape store experience will evolve and change in a normal process, unless the Gov does something stupid to put small shops and online vendors out of business. It would most certainly be of greater benefit to let the industry grow and thrive than to strangle it. This is all speculation of course, but it would indicate the vape shop experience will likely change dramatically in the future.

After reading some of the comments i consider myself truly blessed. I have a Smoke Shop/Package store that has a pretty good selection of vaping supplies and the employees are super nice. I also have 2 Vape shops one 3 miles from work another 6 or 7 miles from home both are nice with great people in them and some killer House blend juice.

The State of Confusion
I wish I had a vape shop close enough to feel uncomfortable in :) The closest ones to me are about 50 miles away. The local smoke shops carry some stuff, but I've been much happier with the stuff I've ordered online.

I live in a rural area of TN and I can relate....

Most of the shops I have been in have "groupee" vapers (if there are any around you).

I have only been in two shops I liked:

Rogue Vapers in Little Rock, AR. (first B&M) I ever went into, and Chase the Vape in Mid-Town Memphis, neither are close to where I live!

They truly care about being friendly and helpful to people, new and experienced alike.

Most shops are gouging the public to pay for their overhead and have idiots as employees.....

IMHO

Last night I was having a really bad night (just lost my job). My wife and I went in to Puckerfish (our local shop) where I was able to chit chat with the owner, who knew me since I'm a regular, and as we walked out he gave me a 30ml bottle of my favorite fluid as a "forced retirement gift". Try that with an online shop.
