Getting my first Nickel build on after work tonight and wanted to make sure I'm doing it right. I have a spool of 26ga Ni200 wire waiting for me at home to go on my Subtank RBA, Mutation X V4, Turbo, Little Boy, etc. I'll go as far as to say I've gotten pretty darn good at building Kanthal coils (twisted, TLP, Parallel, standard, etc; nothing too fancy) but haven't built a Nickel coil yet. From my understanding, you want a nice spaced coil and for it to come out at between .05 and .15ohm (this is all being powered by an IPV4, btw). Then I go looking around and see twisted Nickel coils and other interesting looking setups.

So that leads me to ask a bunch of questions:

Am I best doing spaced coils?
Can I do contact coils, twisted, etc and get good consistent results?
How well do dual coils work out in an RDA?
Should I dry burn the coils like I do my Kanthal builds or is that a no no?

Forgive a newby at this but I learn quick. Thanks guys!

I have only played with smaller ga ni200 (28,30,32) but if you can wrap with kanthal, you can certainly wrap nickel!!

I tried twisted 30 and 32, nice, easy. For me, spaced coils were the most consistent. Wrap like you normally do an pull a little on the loose end to space. If the look a little wonky, no biggie. Take your time when wicking, as the coils are a bit more fragile and tend to want to go every which way. Once wicked on your atty, I used a micro flat screwdriver to get my spacing right. Biggest thing to do is make sure your connections are super solid!!

You got this!!

No dry burn as well, not necessary!

1. Spaced coils are the safest. You will not be able to test the build for hot spots and unequal heating so if you do a compressed coil you had better get it right the first time. (See #4)
2. Loads of people get great results with twisted wire builds. Also you can do a nickel and kanthal twisted wire setup and that will still work. Compressed coils are possible, but not recommended. (See #4)
3. Dual coils (Or more) work great. There is nothing about a nickel build that limits you to a single coil.

4. NEVER dry-fire nickel. First, it will make the nickel wire even softer which makes it easier to damage or deform. Also, when nickel is heated above 650F it begins releasing highly toxic fumes. This is why temperature control mods all max out at 600F.

Well here's my first (well technically 2nd, first was a single coil) build. Dual 10 wrap 26ga NI200 spaced coil coming out to .052. Set to 500° and 50 joules, she's a rocking! Loving this setup, thanks for the advice guys!

Edit: The only issue I have is every once in a while, after sitting for a bit, I'll try to fire it and get a "Short" message. I have to fire it a couple times to get it going and then it works just fine; I can hit drip hit drip until the cows come home but once it sits, it almost acts as if it needs "warmed up". I've set the resistance a couple times (all while it's been sitting and cooled off) to no avail. I can't quite figure out what is causing it, any ideas gentlemen?
