Hi,
Was a 1-2 pack a day smoker for 40+ years and switched totally to e-cigs about a month ago. Started coughing really hard about a week ago. Lungs/or muscles, not sure which, are sore from coughing so hard. Sounds insane but thinking of smoking an analog to "clear" my congestion and tightness. How strange is that? Anyway, I've heard that mullein is a good herb for repairing the lungs and wondered if anyone here has tried some kind of mullein juice in their e-cig. Could a person just boil up some mullein leaves, strain, and then drip some juice into a cart? Would it be strong enough to do any good?

This is an issue to which Drew at NHaler has given some thought. His "Lung Juice" contains ten herbs, including what he calls "Mulletein" leaf. Since Google asks me if I mean "Mullein" when I try to search for "Mulletein," I assume that is just one of Drew's unique spellings.:D

Unless one of my veteran cronies has more first-hand knowledge of this herb and its use in e-liquid, I recommend that you contact "Drewsworld" here on ECF or check out his website.

First off... consult your physician first before using herbs or vaping them. There can be interactions with other drugs you might be taking or serious allergic reactions (of which you should be aware of any signs before using any kind of herb). It is possible to over dose on herbal mixes.

Mullein is non toxic, but other herbs in some liquids can cause problems. Better safe than sorry!

If you just started coughing after using the e-cig (and it didn't make you cough at first) there are a few things that can be causing this.

1) Allergy season. I hate this time of year! The vapor will stick to the mucous that is in the back of your throat which can cause seasonal coughing for some e-cig users. See if you Dr. has suggestion for a good antihistamine or drying agent.

2) Did you recently change your liquid to a higher milligram of nicotine? Nicotine makes some people cough. If so, cut the liquid, or try going back to a lower milligram to see if that eases the coughing.

3) Did you change your liquid supplier? Some liquids flavoring chemicals make people cough due to an allergic reaction. Switch back to what you used before coughing to see if that alleviates the problem.

4) Did you change to a liquid with VG or PG in it? Some cough when trying a liquid that is now all PG or VG or even a mixture. Again, an allergic reaction. PG allergy is common and you may have built up to it. Try a 100% VG liquid or a 100% PG liquid to see if that eases the problem.

5) A pre-existing condition. If you continue to cough, see your Dr. to rule out any infection or problem.

Happy and Healthy Vaping! :vapor:

Hellen is absolutely correct in advising you to consult your physician! [I just focused on the narrow issue in the title of the post.] And she has listed some very possible causes of your cough.

Another cause may have nothing to do with vaping per se. It may very well be a good thing, the delayed reaction to quitting smoking three weeks prior: your lungs purging all the accumulated yuck from 40+ years of smoking. From a fellow former 40-year smoker: that's what my lungs did. Check with your doctor, but make sure s/he knows you recently quit the cancer sticks.
