I was at Applebee's in West Lebanon, NH yesterday. After I was done eating I asked if vaping was allowed. The waiter conferred with the manager who said that it was not allowed because it "looked wrong".
I didn't feel like arguing but my teenage son quickly pointed out that he could order a "virgin" drink and it would look like he was drinking alcohol which is clearly "wrong" for a 14 year old. They failed to see the connection.

Stupid should hurt.

I think it is better NOT to ask, because then they are not going to consider whether what YOU are doing is OK, they are going to think about what the other customers might wonder..."is that lady smoking?"

I don't feel I should have to ask, because what I am doing is not illegal, wrong or unhealthy in any way. But I don't blow huge clouds or make a spectacle of myself in a restaurant. No one has ever stopped me.

If a manager asked me to stop, I would. I am not vaping to make a scene. But I think it is good for the public to see it and to see it is inoffensive.

I usually do ask permission BUT I also explain how an electronic cigarette works as well as pointing out that its just harmless water vapor. If that doesnt work I show them the letter from Ken Cuccinelli (Virginia Commonwealths Attorney) saying its okay to vape in restaurants in this state.

This is something that in most restarants is at the manager's discretion. I do think it's best to ask. I've never been turned down but, the closest I came was when a manager told me he'd had problems with someone using a cigarette looking kit and other customers complained about the guy smoking.

If you choose to vape anywhere in public, please don't use anything that resembles a cigarette, it just makes everyone around you and the establishment uncomfortable. If you think it will cut down on unwanted attention, it won't. If you vape in public with any device, you are going to attract some attention. Usually it's discrete but, it'll be there.

When I went to the casino here in my town I had asked if I could vape in the non smoking section the lady was very responsive and asked the manager then she came back and told me I am not allowed to vape in the non smoking section and that if I wanted to vape me, my daughter and grandson had to be in the smoking section.

I just got back from Las Vegas and I vaped everywhere. Of course, there you can smoke in the casinos too. In a casino I can honestly say it wouldn't have occurred to me to ask. In the convention center (No, I didn't go for fun.) you aren't allowed to smoke but, I vaped. No one batted an eye.

In the casino restaurant here they have a non smoking section completely blocked of from the rest of the smoking section. We don't go in anymore. You can not vape anywhere public in my town. I almost got kicked out of burger king by vaping after I asked and got permission, not even 5 minutes later the manager came out and told me I could not vape and said something about health regulations. It was a while ago that happened. Since the casino I have not tried vaping anywhere inside a public establishment.

Hello, fellow Richmonder! Where did you get the letter from Ken Cuccinelli???

I haven't asked for permission, and no proprietors have told me it wasn't OK to vape in their establishment yet. But, just in case.....

I agree ...
I've been openly vaping in public (Everywhere) for the past 4 years.
Not once has anyone told me not to vape

I don't ask "mommie" if its OK to vape
AND
When vaping...I don't look around as if I feel the least bit concerned
what others think or if anyone might be looking at me. I act no different
than if I were chewing gum.

If you want to draw attention to yourself when vaping in public
1. Act like you are doing something wrong
2. Look around for the approval or disapproval of those in the area
3. Act in anyway different than everyone else in the area
4. Blow huge vape rings if your not getting any attention.

Geez ...
I've seen vapers at Walmart constantly looking around to see who's
looking at them ... Reminds me of what a shoplifter would do.

I've seen vapers in restaurants who are constantly looking around
the room making eye contact with others ... No one else in the
restaurant is behaving that way.

Yes, it should. We were just at Applebee's last week and had no problems vaping there. We don't blow the vapor all around, but we don't hide under the table to vape, either. Then again, we didn't ask beforehand. If they're given an option and time to think, that's the problem.

i usaully just go to the ladies room.. only once was i asked to go to the mens room.. my strategy is diversion.. they are so worried about a man in the ladies room they dont notice the vape.. (pastors cant sit under tables, just not cool)

If I was sitting at the bar with friends I probably wouldn't have bothered to, either. I was in the restaurant area with my family surrounded by other families.

While we may feel like it's no different than chewing gum, we *are* putting a visible vapor out into the air and I don't believe that pretending we have more rights than everyone else sitting around is going to help the cause in the long run. Yes, it is absolutely "better" than cigarette smoke, by far, but it's still *there*.
