Dr. Michael Siegel from Boston University estimates the electronic cigarettes are probably about 99.9% safer than regular cigarettes, and I'll go with his estimates.

In my personal experience they are better. Long term who knows but we know for sure analogs are not good. Even given the choice of the two on the price and smell issues alone I'd go for the ecig.
There haven't been any studies on the long term effects of vaping, but all the evidence currently available points to it being vastly safer than smoking.
If you want to be really sure don't inhale into your lungs (there is no need to since most of the nicotine from vapor is absorbed through your mouth and sinuses)
