Are fancy $100+ mechanical mods a waste of money if you're still working with vivi novas and protanks?

Beat me to it ;)

OK, I'll try to add something to this thread in a productive sort of way... "i am considering a mech mod as a back up"

Yeah, so did I. Now my Vamo is the backup for my mech! And a second mech on order with at least a third in my future too, I'm sure. Glad I didn't settle on a Provari right out of the gate or it would be collecting dust too! That's just ME though ;)

I've had pretty much the same experience. I still use my Provari quite a bit, but I find myself reaching for a mechanical more and more. The biggest difference for me was getting a tiny 14500 mod; now it feels strange to use the Provari, and I keep pinkie-pressing the bottom expecting it to fire.

It's nice to have mods that require nothing more than an easily-acquired common battery to keep right on firing.

I'd say no but in my opinion, you aren't using the full potential that rebuildables + mech mods can offer. If you use vivi's or protanks you wont be able to go lower in ohms.

Vivi with 1.8ohm coil will work nice on a Mech and actually looks okay on some. Once you have one you may decide to expand on your inventory. the IGO-L suggestion is an excellent starting point. Simple to build/ rebuild and works great. Small and not intimidating at all.

You do need to clean mechanicals ... once a week will usually do. Just a simple warm soap bath and an old toothbrush on the threads and contacts. It will keep the threads smooths and the contacts conductive.

I'll respectfully disagree. You should clean *anything* that gets exposed to the elements, finger prints, and/or e-liquid. A warm soap bath is for my cats and maybe my wife, if she's in the right mood ;) . My mechs (and all my other batteries) get cleaned with a polishing cloth and everything that is threaded gets hit with a *light* coat of Ox-Gard (like Noalox but with a more conductive formula.) That's the 510 threads, both on the mods and the attachments, the threads in any tube sections and end caps, and even a little on the contact points. This prevents corrosion and I rarely have to touch any of it more than once a month of frequent use.
