So stupid me. I decided to check the voltage drop on my cheap fasttech stingray mech.
pvd black plated stainless stingray clone (floating 510 pin with magnetic switch)

With no atty attached I stood the mech up on the table in front of me and placed one test lead against the brass top ground with left hand while puishing down on the mod to fire the mod, while at the same time with right hand I carefully touched the 510 center pin.

Oh Noooo,
while looking at my multimeter the mech suddenly went hot in my hand... arrgh nooo so I quickly ran the rather hot mod straight to the kitchen and set it in the cold oven to cool off hopeing the vtc4 wasnt about to go ballistic. sheeesh

So anyway, I must have accidentally shorted across the 510 with my test lead while i was looking at the meter...yikes...
the short was only for about a second or so and the battery didnt drop any voltage or vent as far as I can tell ?

but the event did blow the switch magnets polarity, rendering them and the mod useless for now.

Afaikt the vtc4 has no outward appearance of damage and didnt vent, it didnt lose any major measurable voltage, charged up fully and has held stable at 4.20 since i charged it.

That being said, I dont have much faith in that battery anymore, even though I rarely EVER vape below .6 ohm and prefer to stay around .7 to .8 most of the time.

Any advice would be appreciated regarding the battery...and btw, does anyone have a us source for switch magnets ?

thank you sando7

yea that sucks oh and by the way, you arent checking any voltage drop measuring that way. your going to get battery voltage there you need to test voltage drop across a load. Sorry you shorted that for no reason.

Thank you Wraith...I did say "stupid me" heh heh. Yeah I do need an inline meter for that...
Something like this dingfod I should trust ?

Any thoughts about my battery that saw that short and went momentarilly hot on me ?
Use it with caution and see if it's ok, or just toss it for peace of mind ?

inspect it does it look ok?? or do you see any evidence that it got too hot? i would probably check the voltage slap it on the charger and see if it takes a 4.2v charge to start.

The only evidence I have is how hot the stingray clone suddenly became in my hand, and the blown magnets the event caused.

But like I said, "afaict the vtc4 has no outward appearance of damage and didnt vent, it didnt lose any major measurable voltage, charged up fully and has held stable at 4.20 since i charged it."

Now a few hours after charging, its still holding at 4.2.

I guess the question should be... How hot (and it was quite hot) IS "too hot" ? considering that there are no outward signs of venting damage swelling discoloration or leakage, and it is a genuine sony vtc4 ?

Too hot would should show some evidence either internal or external. So you would likely not take a full charge, or hold a full charge. You may notice that the voltage drops off significantly faster than it would before under your normal vaping circumstances. IE typically you can make the battery last 3 hours and now it lasts 1 hour if your lucky. external you would see swelling curled/burned wrapper etc. also smell the battery. They can often have a nasty burnt chemical smell. I would think you are ok to at least try using it.

As far as measuring voltage drop. The measure you tried should read at the batteries voltage. You should never have to measure this way. Here is a bit of electronics 101. A mech mod is a straight battery connection. There is no resistance load between the negative, positive, and pin it is just a straight shot. So this should always read the batteries voltage unless something is wrong with your mech. If there is a drop here it will be negligible like talking 0.001 V which is well within margin of error.

So instead next time read the batteries voltage before you place it in the mech and jot it down on paper. Then put your atty on the mech and take off the top cap. Make sure your cotton has juice. Place the positive lead on the positive screw. I personally use a alligator clip attachment for my probe. Then place the negative lead somewhere on the mod preferably as close to the button as possible. Then fire the mod and take note of the number. Odds are it will be a bit jumpy with a multimeter due to the drain so use the first number you see do not wait for it to stop as then your battery voltage will be wrong. Short burst is key here. Subtract the numbers and that is your drop.
