The quartz might work Bert! I made a bead on it with ease. Just hoping I'll be able to get it off! Any suggestions?

Bead release? I was actually considering this problem while I was blowing glass earlier Amber, I was thinking that bead release might not stick to the quartz very well, and the solution I thought of was to chuck the rod up in a drill and sand it with sand paper on the end where you will dip it in the bead release. Please keep me updated on how it works out!

OK so who are the signature makers around here? I need a new one, but Trippified! Time to show more love for Bert and the Trippy Nation! Yes we have grown past being a Ville, we are now the Trippy Nation!

I can make one Brutus. It'll be Monday before I can get to it, but if you'll send me the pics and info I can do it!

Amber, one cool thing about quartz is that you can heat it up white hot and dip it in ice water without it breaking! This is because it does not expand and contract as much as other glass when it gets hot. Soft Glass has a COE of 90-106 Borosilicate is COE 33 Quartz is COE 8! When the COE changes the rate of expansion changes exponentially by the way.

Evening Tripsters - wow, tons of cool tips! Mine are on the way, so maybe tomorrow I'll have pictures.

Cyclin, dang, sorry to see your donut, but it looks like Bert has ya covered. :toast:
If you don't mind me asking, so I can avoid whatever, how did it break? A fall?

Brutus! Way cool donut! You have been pining on that one for a while!

I did. The first one I tried the bead release was too thin and it fused to the quartz. No budge! This time I triple dipped it. I'm soaking it in water now. Here's hoping!

try building it out of high temperature graphite (as a mandrel) It will seize but the graphite will disintegrate in the kiln. I just dont know if it will disintegrate in the flame temperature needed for quartz (before finishing) Graphite does work really great with boro as a mandrel substitute. You just need to make sure you don't overheat the boro (to the white color stage) or else your work will slump. You want to leave the boro glow in the red/orange stages will working.

I'm impressed you got quartz to melt on a national 3m!!!! WoW! I started on a 3a and still teach students to flamework with the national 3a....i own 8! :D

LOL, I'm thankful there were no cameras around. Funny thing is it was the last bubble wrap I opened so I knew it was whatever the surprise was going to be. I had to stop for a second because my hands were actually trembling because I thought it might actually be my "Precious". Then I opened it and danced through the house with it. A 50 year old man should not act like that, oh screw it, I loved acting like that. :)
