ASH Scotland report on awareness and use of ecigs and young people in Scotland is available on their website

Information and resources for professionals | ASH Scotland

Here is the direct link to the report:

A good read. Most of the regular e-cig users among young people are smokers.
And 78% of those who tried e-cigs are smokers

We asked young people why they tried an e-cigarette for the first time and the
majority stated reasons of curiosity. We did not ask if any felt they had been forced
into trying one i.e. through peer pressure.

This echoes existing knowledge about the behaviour of young people, and current
research does not provide strong evidence that e-cigarettes are a gateway into
regular smoking.

Which can - again - be used to debunk the "gateway" blathering of the tobacco Control Industry.

Please note that ASH Scotland (run by Amanda Sanford) is a different organization than ASH UK (run by Deborah Arnott). It would be helpful if the title of this thread was corrected to reflect that fact.

Key findings of the ASH Scotland survey at http://www.ashscotland.org.uk/media/6155/e cig Final report 07.14.pdf
include:
- 22% of teens (13-18 years) smoked one or more cigarettes per week,
- 15% of teen smokers used an e-cig one or more times per week,
- 2% of teen nonsmokers used an e-cig one or more times per week,
- 39% of teens reported ever use of an e-cig,
- Among teen smokers who used e-cigs, 29% did so to quit smoking, 23% did so to reduce cigarette consumption,
- 53% of teens agreed that e-cigs are less harmful than cigarettes, while 12% disagreed,
- 12% of teens thought cigarette smoking was cool, and 12% thought e-cig use was cool,

Consistent with all other surveys, ASH Scotland’s survey found no evidence that e-cigs addict nonsmokers, are gateways to cigarettes, or renormalize smoking.

The ASH Scotland survey (modeled after a similar survey conducted by ASH Wales) attempted to find that e-cig advertising was influencing youth to use e-cigs. But they didn't find much, if any, evidence of that either (despite the lead in questions).

Although the ASH Scotland survey contains lots of anti e-cig rhetoric, I was pleasantly surprised to see that ASH Scotland no longer opposes e-cig use by smokers (as they did several years ago).

The ASH Wales survey (that the ASH Scotland survey was modeled after) had even better findings, including:
http://www.ashwales.org.uk/creo_fil...nd_e-cigarettes_in_wales_final_march_2014.pdf
- 56.1% of teen smokers ever used an e-cig,
- 3.8% of teens who never smoked had ever used an e-cig,
- 33.7% of teen smokers currently use e-cigs,
- 5.6% of teen exsmokers currently use e-cigs
- .3% of teens who never smoked currently use e-cigs

Where are the MSM headlines? "Real-world data conclusively demonstrate vaping is not a gateway to smoking for youth, but it may very well be the most significant off-ramp. Rabid tobacco control groups made to swallow their hysterical lies and malicious propaganda as to the unsubstantiated gateway allegations"

Here's what the MSM is doing with the results of this survey - saw this tweet today: "Sheila Duffy of @ASHScotland says bubblegum flavour e-cigs are made to target young people " - but I don't recall seeing any questions on the survey regarding flavors.
And there is this page with numerous links to media references. ASH Scotland daily bulletin 11 July 2014

<emphasis mine>

Isn't there a treatment for that with a series of a preventive vaccine? 5 doses over 28 days should correct their condition..

As to the rabid hostity towards e-cigs on the part of the Tobacco Control Industry (TCI), this is a very good explanation by Carl Phillips:

Economic illiteracy about tobacco, from the antepode | Anti-THR Lies and related topics

Please note that the TCI value "unity in tobacco control" over the health of human beings.

The great piece by Carl Phillips refers to this complete piece of ... uhm.... blathering and lies here:
https://theconversation.com/is-big-tobacco-abandoning-smokes-for-e-cigarettes-28328

The blathering crap is not worth bothering with. But the comments are really good - a Who is Who of Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) (Clive Bates, Carl Philips, Phil Godshall, Gilbert Ross). Enjoy the comments by THR advocates and vapers. They will tell you all you need to know about the real motives behind the screaming of the TCI :D

Yeah,TCI failed their own "scream test"
They are screaming at the top of their lungs - to protect their own parasitic existence.

... scroll down in the comments until you get Judith Olney and Clive Bates. The crap above them is not worth reading.

Correction, Sheila Duffy of ASH Scotland issued a press release at
New survey on e-cigarette use by young people in Scotland (1) | ASH Scotland
that intentionally misrepresented many findings in ASH Scotland's survey to confuse and scare the public (just like CDC Director Tom Frieden has repeatedly done to misrepresent CDC's survey findings).

Notice that the title of Duffy's press release, and the talking points at the end of it had little to do with the survey findings, but were instead the spin she wanted the news media to highlight, which of they did at
BBC News - Scottish teenagers admit trying e-cigarettes
