Please move this to the appropriate section, but I couldn't find a 'Lounge' or anywhere more appropriate to ask this question....

If I want to quote a person who has done the same thing and both quotes appear in his post, how do I get both of those quotes in my post when answering him? Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me.

You can also copy/paste the text you're quoting and just use the [quote ] and [/quote ] tags (without the spaces)

so this post was quoted by
this post and they appear like this with the BBCode tags

Here's what I typed to do that. I added a space in the brackets so that the code doesn't take, just picture that without the spaces after "quote":
[quote ][quote ] so this post was quoted by [/quote ] this post and they appear like this with the BBCode tags [/quote ]

When doing all this manually, you can add the user's names, too, by adding this info (again, I added a space before the last bracket so you can see what I'm typing):
username said:
username said:
this is what happens when you add the =username, just change the "username" part to the name you want to display

You can also use the little speech bubble icon in the toolbar to insert the quote tags rather than typing them. Doing all this manually can be a pain, so it's not likely you'll do so very often, but once in a while it comes in handy to understand how the BBCode works.

I hope that helps ;-)

I can click the "quote" tab and the person's quote appears in a box above my response. But how do I get a person's quote and another person's response to that quote, then I give my response below those two. (thanks killjoy1 :)

I think the answer (unfortunately) may vary depending on which Forum we're on.

If you are trying to quote multiple people the procedure is as follows. Say you are trying to quote 2 people:

1. On the first person's post click the far right quote icon (the small quote box with the + sign).

2. On the second person's post click the reply with quote link (2nd from right). This will bring up both posts in the same reply box and then you are free to respond.

The procedure is the same no matter the number of posts you are quoting. All quotes up until the last on use the link on the far right. When you reach the final post to quote use the second from right.

killjoy did explain this the right way. to capture a quote that was quoted in a post you are quoting (oh my!) you will have to use ''copy and paste'' - it will not transfer on its own;)

as you can see i'm quoting my post above - the quote from you that was included in my post has now been erased, it will not transfer but by using 'copy and paste' i captured it and can insert it here:

and if you want to get fancy by using the quote brackets as explained in killroy's post you'll end up with this

It definitely does vary based on forum software and settings. vBulletin by default strips the quotes in posts so you actually quote only the text by the poster without anything they've quoted in their post. Some I've seen will quote everything, including already nested quotes, and it gets hard as hell to read sometimes when you have a series of 5 or 6 nested quotes all in one quote

I assume you want the "quote within a quote" thing (ie - "nested" quotes). In order to do that you'd have to do it manually, or you can use the multi-quote option as Elendil described above

To do it manually, here is an example. If I quote tib's post above you get this:
killjoy did explain this the right way. to capture a quote that was quoted in a post you are quoting (oh my!) you will have to use ''copy and paste'' - it will not transfer on its own;)

So I'll just copy/paste the text that was quoted in that post with its own quote tags, inserting it before tib's text and this is what I did (with spaces added to the quote brackets so they don't work) and how it displays:

There is a hack available for vBulletin that will override the default and allow nested quotes, but since it is a hack and not an official add-on there's no way it would ever get implemented here ;-)

Excellent instructions Killjoy1 !

This is the way I do it !

I quoted that post using reply with quote, and then I copied each into the first quote. You have to highlight each individual quote and then click the balloon quote icon at the top to nest the balloons.

No nested quotes please.

It's bad enough when an inappropriate post get quoted all over a thread and we have to track down all the quoted copies. If people had enough sense not to quote something they know is going to be deleted, it would be different. But they don't so no nested quotes, please:)

You guys are making my head hurt... I'm trying to properly quote 2 paragraphs out of 2 diff long posts, and reply to both in a single post. Now I'm making my head hurt....
I'm calling this practice.
