I take it I am the sole owner of a Minikin 3? I'm still telling you it's a great vape. LOL.

Yes, it looks like a red headed stepchild but I LIKE those. They're fun. I just need to know I'm not alone.

I wonder if Minikin has stopped production yet, based on this thread. It's got to be the worst selling upgrade since... Everything Apple. Heh.

Hey everyone! I have a Luna that was broken when I received it (chip is fried). I tried installing a mosfet to get it working again, but now it just fires as soon as I put the battery in. I thought I wired it correctly, but I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to wiring - can anyone tell me where I went wrong? I'd love to start being able to use the Luna.
What is the backstory for this Luna that you didn't immediately return it for a replacement?
I would have returned it and gotten a replacement ... the path of least resistance.

You need to be very careful. Having knowledge with what you are doing is crucial with mech mod wiring. Or for that matter any kind of electronic wiring. Especially since you said "I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to wiring". That is exactly what leads to very serious mishaps which end up in the daily news cycle. That is something the vaping community does NOT need. I'm sure you've seen the horror stories ... right? So why mess with something by your own admission you have no experience with? You are asking for trouble and since you don't know what you are doing it will surely find you.

Having said that... If it autofires when you pop in a battery ... I will just STOP there on purpose. Again if you don't know what you are doing or understand what can potentially happen ... just don't go any further!!!

I have an electronics background as I used to repair large mainframe computers, and networking devices, down to the component level (field service engineer). It has been years for me ... CAUTION and SAFETY always ruled the day ...AND... knowing what one was doing above all else. I was HIGHLY trained and you are not. I never jumped into something haphazardly ... ever ---> you have and you certainly shouldn't have.

What is the exact mosfet you tried replacing it with and where did you get it?
Details, specs and wiring info please.
If you lack the knowledge how did you know what mosfet to buy?
Or where to even begin with the wiring?

If you just guessed at the wiring ---> WOW ---> that is the wrong way to approach this for someone who does not know what they are doing.

You may think I am coming down hard on you ... well yes, I suppose I am ... but this is only because of your own admission of not knowing what you are doing. Please don't take "all this" the wrong way. I have seen people loose fingers who were more highly trained than I.

What s the best way to address the patina on the copper rosefinch? I remember using something on a copper mod that scratched it years ago and don't want to do that again.
@rosesense , are you wanting the patina or looking to avoid it?

I want to avoid it.
Keeping it cleaned with water and mild soap would be the easiest and safest approach IMO. Dawn on a non-abrasive dishrag, clean it, then take another damp soft non-abrasive rag to wipe it down. Dry it with another non-abrasive cloth.

Here are some other ideas: https://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/maintenance-and-repair/cleaning/how-to-clean-copper

I would be leery of any technique using possible abrasives which may scratch the copper.

I have used ketchup with success on my brass King v1 mech. From the above article: "Grab a bottle of ketchup for the third natural cleaning idea. Yes, ketchup. This is how to clean copper with a condiment. The acid in the tomatoes cleans grime off copper. Rub a thin layer of ketchup on your copper item and buff till it shines. Rinse and dry."

When they say rinse and dry ... I just use a damp non-abrasive cloth for that and finished with water and mild soap.

Lately I just keep them clean with mild soap and water. Easiest.

ETA: I am certain you know this but obviously you want to make sure everything is nice and dry.

Brasso works great. I use a Conoisseurs polishing cloth on them between complete teardown and cleaning. I usually let mine get patinaed. It is a lot of work keeping them polished all the time. I end up slacking, but I like the way patina looks anyway.

So Dawn keeps it at bay and Palmolive speeds it up? I just want to keep it shiny and like new, none of that splotchy, dark, dull stuff.

This tip from that diynetwork article is odd and confusing: "You can make another natural cleaner by mixing lemon juice (or vinegar) and baking soda into a sudsy mixture. Apply to the copper and buff with a soft cloth. Rinse with water and dry. These mixtures work because the acid in the vinegar or lemon juice strips the oxidized patina from the copper and the salt acts as a mild abrasive to remove the grime. You can also use lime juice instead of lemon." First of all, baking soda reacts with the acid in lemon juice/vinegar to produce carbonic acid that almost instantly decomposes into water and carbon dioxide, so there really isn't any acid left to strip away the patina. Second, this option doesn't call for salt, so how can it "act as a mild abrasive"? Maybe the sodium acetate that is also a byproduct of the chemical reaction has some abrasive qualities, but in my experience it's not very noticeable. And, possibly, the fizzing caused by the released carbon dioxide might exert some scrubbing action. But I think baking soda alone would be more effective, maybe followed by a vinegar rinse.

I've used Dawn many times on my King mech and it's fine. I have always figured since they are using it to clean up birds and other critters after oil spills, plus other calamities, that it must be safe for cleaning brass or copper.

The gun folks, my brother included, use it on brass bottle neck cases with no problems. The two ingredients of concern there are ammonia and ammonium. None of the Dawn products have those.

If you want to be 100% certain then go with Brasso or Wright's Copper Cream like Skunk said. Both are made for cleaning copper + brass. I was just looking around my basement and I found a bottle of Brasso. Funny, the things around the house I tend to forget about. I'll use it on my mods.

That I did not know. I do like the patina you got from Palmolive. Sure made a difference on your mod and it looks awesome. Thx ;)

I am scared of using vinegar since I recently discovered it will strip rust off tools.
Well, the patina you don't want is essentially copper's rust equivalent, so this seems like a good thing to me. That said, if I want to shine mine up, I'll probably use baking soda. It's magic.

Another member asked a question about cleaning brass and copper in the picture of the day thread. I mentioned we were discussing it over here.

I just posted this over there and to keep this thread up-to-date I should put it here seeing as this is where the discussion started I guess???

cross post: @DeloresRose asked about using a silicone packet stored with the Rosefinches and this was my reply.

I was looking up info for both copper and brass cleaning again after dinner. I don't know about the silicone packet. Maybe try and see??? I'm thinking if we keep them clean with Brasso or Wright's Copper Cream that should do it.

If you are ever looking for long term storage there are jewelers packets that will keep them from tarnishing for up to 12 months. Bags: Search

This article has good cleaning tips from a jewelers perspective: https://www.riogrande.com/article?name=PreventingTarnish

An architectural digest article basically says to use Brasso or other similar cleaners.
How to Clean Brass Like a Pro

I seem to recall @Skunk! mentioned Bar Keepers Friend in a thread some time ago but I don't remember the thread or context.

I like Barkeepers for lots of stuff, it’s great on the stove and stainless. But these mods are so smooth and shiny, I’d be afraid it would scratch them.

Brasso is only $3 at Walmart (already in my cart). I’m going to test it on something and see if it’s abrasive.

I think first, I may try the ketchup trick. I used to do that to copper bottom pans and it does clean them. Honestly though, it would be nice if there was some sort of coating on them so I wouldn’t have to worry about it haha.

I used to only build PCs, that was more than enough for me. Plus it was back in the days of pentium 75's ;)

    Fun stuff hey?
I flew all over repairing/installing systems for large corporations. Only thing that wore on me after many years was being on-call 24/7/365. It didn't matter if it was my vacation time or a holiday the company would call. That and travel after 9/11 became too messy. I can't imagine doing that these days with all the planes being so packed. That whole bag is a young persons game. ;)
