Depends on how you use it. If you drip then the wick is not really needed. The purpose of the wick is to provide a transfer mechanism for the fluid in a cartridge to reach the coil. The fluid wicks from the filler into the mesh bridge then to some filiment fibers under the bridge to the coil where it is vaporized. If the wick is removed and a filled cartridge is used, the only transfer taking place is whatever fluid filters out of the cart filler
through gravity.
Removing one from an old atty and attempting to transfer it to another would be difficult at best. Possibly do-able but I've never tried.
