So my friend needed a pv to use for the day so I gave him my cheap mod and it shorted out internally. He comes up to me and asks me why it's not hitting and the first thing I think of is short so I tested his atty and it was good, so I figured it must be the mod and sure enough that's what it was. This isn't like a k100 where there are no wires and when you get a short, you get a DEAD short, this one has small wires so the battery wasn't burning hot or anything, it was just warm. There was smoke coming out of the mod when I pressed the button, maybe it was the solder joints in the mod, with no atty connected and when I removed it I noticed the battery had white residue stuck on the top. I don't feel comfortable using this particular battery in a mod so I'm wondering if it should be thrown out or can it be used in a protected APV like mini provari?

Without seeing it, that sounds like it partially vented.

I wouldn't trust it at ALL and would dispose of it at a location that takes used/spent batteries.

Batteries are (quite simply) small containers of stored energy. Like a firearm cartridge, a firecracker, or a stick of dynamite (well, maybe not that much energy). If in doubt about the safety of any stored energy container, the best practice is to dispose of it as safely as possible.

Yeah, definitely dispose of the battery.

And I would chuck that mod too, as it will likely keep killing batteries, and eventually may cause one to explode. If you had used some off-brand Ultrafire/Trustfire battery in that, your friend may have had some serious injury inflicted on him. Just be glad you used a top-notch quality battery and all it did was vent rather than explode.

batteries are cheap dental or facial reconstructive surgery isn't

It's possible the center conductor on the mod has been pushed down too far and shorted, similar to the eGo even these larger MOD's and even high dollar rigs can suffer from the crushed center pin insulator resulting in a short

Don't mess around with Li Ion batts...due to advancements in technology they are VERY powerful but also incredibly volatile if not used correctly which could lead to explosive failures.

The bad thing about mechanicals there is NO protections for shorts, very little forgiveness for lack of knowledge on Li Ion batteries or their operational range, small margin for error in the ability to push the batteries outside their limits quickly, however, there is a solution, putting electronic circuitry between the battery and the low resistance coils that do offer protections is a way to go...not sure if you have heard of the kick, kick2 or a myriad of comparable type addons but I would recommend researching them and then investing in one.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses, the battery is taped up and ready to be disposed of properly in the dumpster.

JK, they have a battery recycle bin at work.
