Oh, AG... the wife and I have been thinking about getting a larger breed for a bit of security around the house. We have a small breed plus a cat (ewww). Also have kids and teens from 7 yrs old on up in and out all day everyday.

We've kind of been looking at either a doby or a German Shephard. Any recommendations? (I'd love a BoerBoel but I can't locate one remotely close to home).

I'm partial to the GSD breed...Dobies are cool too.

GSD's, IMO, are the most intelligent & loyal dog a person could ever have. Don't get me wrong, there are GSDs that are dumber than mud, but German bred GSDs have the highest breeding standard of any dog in the world. American-type/bred...not so much. If you get one, check out it's pedigree before you buy.

Shadoe will be 10y/o in May & is a 3 year cancer survivor.

Thats Awesome!!

I'm leaning GSD because of their intelligence. My wife is concerned about shedding and leaning Dobbie.

I first need to find a respectable local trainer as I work 65-84 hours per week and simly don't have the time that a new pup deserves.

To train a dog properly...you need to be very involved...otherwise, they will run you over...someone else can teach them to sit, stay, etc....but they have to bond with you...

You could also look into the Giant Schnauzer...they are shedless & have a great temperment

Yes, but the idea is a well behaved, well trained dog that when a stranger simply sees it he thinks, "Time to move along!"

GSD and Dobby automatically give off that protective aura but can be gentle giants. Pits, rots, sure they can also be intimidating, but may have a bad overall temperment... temprament... ah, you know what I mean. :D

Yes. I'm hoping my work hours recede this summer so that I can pursue this further. I definitely do not want to raise a pup that becomes the pack leader!
