WOW - a 7 hour trip with a new pup. YIKES! Hopefully, you have someone to go with you. If not, you have good company on the way home.
Glad everyone helped you out Urge and dont feel left out cause we all endure this from time to time.
I have found that switching flavors frequently keeps the buds dancing better and less prone to this. The Orchard Frost would probably help you out when this does happen. I myself am not a menthol person at all but when the buds go south it is my goto to clear things up.
Even the slightest signs of a cold, sniffles, stuffed nose can cause this to happen as our taste buds are hugely associated with out smell as well. Think of when you were young and didnt like the taste of things and you would pinch your nose, it does help and it is a big hinderance. Even though we dont feel sick or show symptoms allergies and such all reflect the ever changing ways of our taste buds.

Glad ya liked those quotes. I think I should write them down myself. What voltage are you currently using? Those high ohm carto's are made for high voltage so I think you're on the right track in snagging a VV PV. I'm not sure if you know this already but there is a little thing called "ohms law" where by you take your volts x volts div by ohms = watts. So let's say your PV is cranking out 3.7 volts and you are using those 3 ohm carto's or atty's. This would look like this.... 3.7x3.7/3= 4.56watts.
The reason this is important to you in very basic terms is because watts is what makes you a happy camper or not when vapping different juices with different ohm cartos at different voltages. Simply put, the watts you generate with your combination of carto and PV is what makes the coils get hot. I believe most people like to vape some where in the 4 to 8 watt range depending on their juice and preferences for a cool vape or a hot vape. Most folks find their sweet spot around 6 watts as a rule of thumb. So with your 3 ohm carto's or atty's you might want to be hitting it with 4 to 4.5 volts to get yourself in that range.
Here is a link to a simple calculator that you can play with and plunk in different values to see the resulting watts.
