I think it is a general policy for airlines that ecigs cannot be USED on a plane, but that its ok to have them in your carry-on. As long as the word "used" is included I don't have a problem with that. Most do not know about ecigs, and if I didn't, I would not want someone next to me sending out billows of some strange vapor. Would make me very uncomfortable. Forget about it looking like smoking, it would look like SMOKE, which I doubt anyone would want to see in flight.

At this point there is zero problem with just having them on your person. I've had my bag thoroughly checked several times in airports, and I always travel with at least a couple weeks worth of gear, and they didn't even raise an eyebrow.

However, if some strident idiot insists on vaping on board and starts yelling about it not being smoke and their rights are being violated, then we may have to kiss even having vaping gear with us goodbye.

I do agree that the feds have enough problems right now to spend time on what should be a private company policy matter.

The issue is currently being discussed in the Legislation News subform:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/legislation-news/223012-plane-ban-planned.html

There is a copy of the proposed reg posted in that thread as well as directions on leaving a public comment.

As far as mistaking vapor for smoking, I think once more people know what e-cigarettes are, they will have no problem figuring out that if they don't smell smoke, what they are looking at is vapor, not smoke.

vaping is perfectly legal in Virginia in all places, even where smoking is banned, and I have never, not once, had a smoker light up because s/he saw my e-cig and mistakenly thought that actual smoking was permitted. If I saw that happen, I would take the responsibility to give the smoker the information.

We could solve the plane problem by having all the airlines post one of the CASAA door decals in their boarding area:

CASAA "Think Outside The Pack" Bumper Sticker - CASAA

NOTE: The wrong page title comes up, but that's really a link to the Anywhere No Smoking Sticker.
