I have a different model efest 6 bay and no complaints. I have a 4 bay nitecore that doesn't get much use (mostly used for my aa/aaa batteries now) and also just picked up an opus bt-c3100 4 bay which is busy refreshing all my batteries.

I'm sorry for the dumb ? But I have never herd of "refreshing" what is that?

Explained in detail here on page 3 under 'refresh mode' - https://imgmgr.banggood.com/images/upload/2014/04/Powerfocus BT-C3100 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS.pdf

In short: it discharges and charges the battery 3 times to optimize it's capacity. Some of my batteries are about a year old but I have more batteries in rotation than most (40+ for the 3 triple, 3 dual and 2 single battery mods in rotation).

It wasn't clear from the link, but how many will it charge at 1A output? The input current was listed at 4A, so I'd suspect that it would revert to .5A charging with 8 18650 batteries.
It will do all 8 bays at 1 amp... magic...

I need some of that magic! Ohm's Law says no without it.
I do not have a wiring diagram, but I suppose it's possible they're using they're own buck/boost/capacitor setup to deliver 8 amps off of a 4 amp adapter. All I know is that it works! If you really want tech, there's a complete review on candlepower forums...

My Xtar VC4 charger came with a USB cable that terminated in a 2conductor plug, but no wall power adapter. It wouldn't even do 1 amp on a single battery with a no-name 1A USB adapter I had.

On the 2.1A Xtar adapter I ordered after the fact it will only do two 18650 at 1A each, which is spec for that four bay charger.. With 4 18650s it goes to .5A. I assumed that the charger in this thread works the same way. Amperage in / number of bays.

Sounds like they did perform some magic inside the case to get it to charge 8 18650s at 1A with a 4A adapter.

The adapter in this case is the size of a laptop power supply brick, though...

The specs show that it's a 12 volt, 4 amp wall brick. 12*4=48 watts, while 8*4.2*1=33.6 watts required to charge all 8 batts at 1 amp. More than enough supplied power to use magic on.

Thanks for the info. P=EI reveals the possibilities. It looks like Xtar locked down the pairing tightly. The VC4 can charge 4 18650's at .5A or 18650's in bays 2 and 4 only at 1A each. If you drop two in slots 2 and 3 it reverts to .5A even if 1 and 4 are empty. It's obviously hardware programming by design.

The charger in this thread is obviously designed to take advantage of the ability to allow wattage to be the distributed where it's needed. That's good and I'll keep it in mind for my next charger purchase. I have four Li-on chargers including an Efest Luc 4 that will charge four bays at 1A, but I also like new toys!

I only have two, the main one is an Xtar XP4 which is great and handles all my charging needs, but I still just ordered an Opus BT-C3100. The Xtar only has lights, the Opus has numbers. Batteries should charge better. :D
