I got my halo g6 starter kit today (yes I know I should have researched and started out with something better like a twist) anyhooo.... I got the 78mm batteries instead of the mini's and I got one manual and one automatic. The instruction booklet says to charge them for 8 hours, use for 20 minutes then charge for an additional hour. What a pain. My question is... can I over charge a battery?

The 8 hour initial charge is not required.

Leaving a battery charging unattended for long times is not a good thing; I used to do the overnight charge bit, but learned from the misfortunes of others. Electronics do fail, and lithium batteries pack a lot of energy. While rare, bad incidents have occurred. Chargers and the pv overcharge protections have faulted, pv launched off charger like a Roman candle.

In my case, my chargers are controlled by a timer switch which cuts off power after 3 hours. Other people use charging bags which contain heat, though those bags still need to be placed on a non flammable surface.

this is untrue, if the light is green it means the batt is no longer drawing any power, there's a cutoff. i've charged my spinner overnight, every night for months now and it's totally fine.

That would be an acceptable truth, but the drawback is that the quality of the chargers is been known Here to not always be of good quality.

    No argument intended:)

Thanks everyone. It's been five hours and the light is not green yet. with conflicting advice I think I'll just go with the instruction manual. Maybe different brands are different.

Sorry, but you'll need to contact Halo at this point. Five hrs sounds too long for those batts, no matter the maker. They may have just a short window to get a DOA replacement, many shops do.

Talking to their CS will clarify any misinformation that you may have gotten here and make clear any possible user error vs manuf. defect.

If you get too many defects from Halo, you can get the same batts at a popular place here called SmokelessImage.
