battery question for 18650

So I'm thinking of purchasing a smoktech sid and it says it takes a 18650 and recommends you use a imr battery ( think that's how you spell it ) what is a imr battery ? I want to be safe in using bigger batteries so I read up on using "protected" batteries and that's what I want but smoktech recommending imr batteries really through me off . To think I was ready to order my first mod lol dammit . IVe been researching non stop before and after work for 3 days now . Thanks again members on this forum are very helpful : D

I'm no battery expert but my layman's understanding is...

Protected have advantages like stopping the battery from getting too discharged or overcharged. However the VV devices use a battery which has, say 4.2 volts max, and somehow "upps" the power to maybe 6 volts. I believe it does this by draining the power far more quickly than a regular batty can handle (hence High Drain). But the protected ones can't do High Drain, so won't work properly. I'm not sure about your particular device but Vamo's and Provari's have thier own inbuilt protection so they won't let the battery get critically low anyway. Make sure you get a good quality charger like the Nitecore Intellicharge tho, cos they protect against overcharging.

Go with the manufacturer's recommendations, most folks swear by AW IMR High Drain, followed by Efest.

IMR is an acronym for lithium manganese rechargeable. LMR is the actual designation. Somehow the L got mistaken for an I and IMR became the acronym.

It's a safer chemistry than Li-ion (Lithium Ion). IMR can handle higher momentary current loads without generating lots of dangerous heat.

VV mods use a buck/boost circuit to raise or lower the output of the battery. The battery simply supplies 3.7v nominal and the circuit raises it or lowers it to suit the needs of the user and regulates it to the desired level. There is heat generated in the process and this is sinked by the circuit and dissipated through the case.

Basic to Advanced Battery Information from Battery University will provide you with all the info you need to make an informed battery choice.
