Hi all,
New to ECF, but have been building for awhile now. I have a question about batteries though.
I currently own a Smoktech Magneto, and I use 18650 purple efests. I own 20a, 30a, and 35a. I know, I know, efests are very suspicious batteries, and I've read everything there is to read about them, and everything I read and hear about them completely contradict each other in every way, so I am at a loss.
Yes, I know about VTCs and LGHEs, Nitecores blah blah.
tl;dr, I own purple efests, that's all I plan on owning for the the time being.
Anyways,
I'm currently running a .43ohm dual coil (.86 each), in my plume veil, and my Magneto seems to get warm sometimes while vaping(using 35As).
I switch over to my Trident running a single coil at .87ohms, and it still gets warm, just takes a bit longer though.
I'm curious as to whether its heat transfer, the batteries are warming, or what.
When I notice it warming, I stop, and check my batts. The RDA is pretty hot, but the batteries are body temp. The 510 on the RDA is hot too.
However, I feel the heat come out of the vent holes, and sometimes the firing button, as well as around the telescope, which makes me believe it is the batteries, but I would think that the battery wouldn't have enough time to cool down upon removing them, which is why I also think maybe it is heat transfer.
If it is heat transfer, cool.
If it is the battery warming, then is it safe to say given the battery isn't like, HOT, that it's normal? I know they are chemically safe, so they would just leak everywhere, but in the instances of cellphone batteries/laptop batteries, I own devices where the battery gets HOT quite frequently, which is normal. So can the same be said for unprotected batteries like the purps?
I havent had any explosions or leakage yet, I'm just curious as to why my entire mech would warm up, not the battery(possibly), and if it where normal for this to happen.
I know some people say warm batteries are bad, and others say it's normal. Which is it?
Either way, when my pv does get warm, I stop and allow possible resistance to build, as well as checking my voltages and resistance with my multimeter. I rarely let my voltage go lower than 3.8.
Thanks for any help!:)

Your .43 coil is pulling almost 9 amps and 33 watts when you are vaping at 3.8v. Be aware that the 35A rating on the purple Efest is a pulse rating, not a continuous rating. No one knows how long the pulse is supposed to be at 35A, but it's reported that the battery is rated for 20A continuous. I use them in my Provari.

If the battery is body temp when you check it and the mod case is hot, it's more than likely to be just heat flow from the coil deck being sinked into the metal of the mech mod. My Provari does that, too. It's hotter close to the atomizer and cool at the battery end.

If your atty is touching the mod you'll get heat transfer. I keep a bit of air space between the two to lessen this transfer. You will still get some transfer through the 510 connection but it will be minimal in comparison.

Another possible heat source is a poor connection, tube threading, switch components, battery contacts, etc. A poor connection restricts the flow of electrons and is released as heat.

So I tried using one of my 30a, and it didn't get warm at all... I'm starting to think I possibly have some dud cells?
I know people who use the 35a in their unregulated mechs as low as .16 with no issues, yet both of the 35s that I have seem to produce some form of heat at .43...

That's because the purple Efest "35" amp battery is really a re-wrapped LG18650HE2 battery with only 20 amps continuous rating. At 0.43 ohms, you getting close to their real amp limit and pushing them pretty hard.

Was hoping that wasn't the case, but thanks.
I've heard that there are some purps with steel markings proving they're rewraps, and others that have none, or unknown markings.
Apparently the 30a, are VTC4s sometimes, from what I have heard, so I guess I'll be sticking with those.
Time for an exchange!
Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.
Take care:)
