Oh, I'm going to show her a video of a battery exploding, haha. That's what I was shown when I first got an 18650. I really can't comprehend why her dad has such blatant disregard for safety. I swear, the natural volt drop of their mods must be saving their lives.

In any case, I can't do any of this until tomorrow, and it's really late here. I'll keep you guys posted tomorrow. Thank you all VERY much for your help.

I think you're right. LOL, that battery was probably running at under a volt.

You probably get the picture from the previous posts, any abnormalities in a battery, (however small) dispose of it immediately and purchase a fresh set. Please tell her not to use her mod until she gets a new set of batteries in it, and make sure she's running a sensible build, NOT ONE OF HER FATHERS. If he has been vaping for 5 years or so, he certainly hasn't learned much about the safety aspects of vaping.

The bold/underline part. That's precisely what they looked like. Small, raised brown specks. I think it is either rusting or corrosion, now that you mention it. It was not like the previous post link of the battery that had the "wet look."

Seriously that was driving me up the wall, haha. I've been searching for about an hour now, and I can't find a picture of other batteries similar to the ones I saw.

I was planning on going back up there tomorrow, because my friend is working again. I don't know this girl or her dad personally. She's a friend of a friend of a friend, so I'll try my hardest to try to get in contact with her to get her to bring the cells. I REALLY want to photograph these cells too, because there doesn't seem to be anything like this on the web haha.
those spots could be the result of the plastic wrapper burning and gassing off due to excessive heat. the batteries them self can bulge if the get to hot the electrolyte will release lithium gas.this gas will ignite on contact with water and produce corrosive and toxic fumes.even humidity in the air can ignite this gas. when you see people doing this kind of vaping RUN AWAY

The gasses released when a Li-Ion cell vents are oxygen, hydrocarbons, and sometimes fluorinated compounds depending on the temperatures. They're quite flammable but I'm not aware of any study that has shown lithium to be present in the gasses. There is no metallic lithium in rechargeable lithium-ion cells, only in the non-rechargeable ones. Water and aqeous firefighting solutions have been found to be the most effective methods of fighting lithium-ion battery fires.

Cells most certainly do release flammable and very toxic gasses when they vent though and I whole heartedly agree with your advice to run from people who abuse their cells so badly. Give them a warning, try to tell them what might happen. But if they look at you like you're nuts...flee. :D

[edit] I should amend my post to say that lithium metal can plate out onto the electrodes in small quantities in rechargeable cells under certain abuse conditions. I have seen no studies that indicate that this metallic lithium can be part of the gasses that a cell can vent though. I guess it's certainly possible but the quantities involved would be overwhelmed by the flammable hydrocarbon gasses also emitted when venting.

Okay, so unfortunately, I couldn't get in contact with her. I asked my buddy to text her and ask her to either bring them up here (to the shop) or to at least send pictures of them, but I've been waiting for about two hours for him to get a response but to no avail.

She comes up here from time to time, so I may run into her eventually, but I'm not holding any hope. If I do, I'll take pictures of the batteries and post them here. My friend informed me that she changed out her batteries, but to some that her dad has, so there's no telling what condition they're in.

I fear that if I try to tell her about how dangerous it is to use warped batteries like that, her father will probably just tell her it's "not a big deal." And she'll most likely listen to him over some guy she doesn't know, i.e. me. Such is the way of things...

Some people are PROUD of their stupidity, and DETERMINED to keep it. But since he's apparently reproduced, Darwin's law won't help any.

Wow, just wow. Does he hate his kids or something??

I remember talking to a guy outside of my old work one day while I was vaping. He was still smoking because his girlfriend wouldnt quit so he always caved in but he was telling me about whatever mech mod he had, his big stash of PANASONIC batteries he bought off ebay, and his favorite build which according to him was like 2 wraps of a coil. All I could think of after hearing that was 'Its a good thing you arent vaping next to me'..

It's always worth giving somebody a warning at least ONCE.
That way, if something does happen like a simple battery slow venting that doesn't do any real damage, they might think twice and say to themselves "hmmm, somebody warned me something bad could happen" instead of just shrugging it off as an unlikely event that just happened to happen once.

OP, I have seen what you are talking about before. It happened when I was drinking and accidentally put one of two batteries in backwards in a dual 18650 unregulated mod. I caught it after about 30 seconds. But it was too late. And so I disposed of those batteries. Too bad. At least they didn't vent or explode.
