Using the saddle valve method, you could greatly reduce the deformation of the carto if you used a tube with a 9mm inside diameter with a hole drilled in it for the piercing needle. You could also cap one end of the tube to get that 'perfect' placement for your punch. Just throw the carto in the tube, line up the tube hole with the piercing needle and crank away. The walls of the tube with the 9mm ID should help to maintain the form of the carto.

I like this idea of putting the carto in a "sleeve" to guide the pin before it punches the carto. Brilliant!
