any unprotected imr battery will do well in a mech by holding a higher voltage for longer. your basically running the voltage of your battery. i personally recommend AW, i've seen the charts of them vs. the hybrid panasonics, and they hold a 3.3+ voltage a lil longer, although, the panasonic hybrid will last longer in general (better for vv imo). i also use the efest brand of imr batteries, cant tell the diff between those and the aw's. so ya. gl.

It depends on what you're using with your mod. If you're gonna use a standard atomizer above 1.4 ohms without a kick, an ICR could be your best bet as these batteries tend to have higher mAh thus giving you more hours of use before in need of charge. But if you're gonna go SLR or you want it with a kick, an IMR high drain would be very nice in this setup.

Be on the lookout for Sanyo cells (protected Li-Ion) and industrial grade panasonic. Almost all of them are suitable for high-drain applications and I think high-end flashlight stores should carry these. Check the specifications just to be sure. The Sanyo cell ones I'm using can handle charging currents up to 2A. EQF18650-26 is what i'm using, orbtronic has the bare cell version of it Sanyo 18650 2600mAh li-ion 3.7V battery - UR18650FM
A discharge rating of 2C means they can deliver double their capacity over the course of an hour, which is good enough I suppose.
NCR18650PD is also recommended, a high drain by panasonic.

As far as brand name: AW, Panasonic, and E-fest seem to have the best reputation. I personally don't trust any battery that has the name "fire" in it.

Protected ICR classification batteries should offer higher mAh ratings, but not sure just how well that works in real life applications. I wouldn't trust the simple protection circuits built into the ICR's for their perceived added safety claims. A 2-cent circuit protector will give you far more protection if that is a determining factor as far as safety.

Since I had a "protected" battery short out and go into thermal runaway, I use the safer chemistry IMR high drain batteries in both my regulated and mechanical mods. I have used AW brand, and recently bought a few E-fests to try out in a small mech mod.

I personally use a Sanyo UR18650FM cell that i salvaged from an old laptop battery, got 3 good ones and throwed 2 away. Tested all what I got from the pack and the three good ones all read 4.2 volts. These are actually good batteries too, I've been using all of it with a .7 ohm coil and it's firing at 25.2 watts with a 6A current. According to the internet, these are 2600mAh, and that's a pretty high ampere for an IMR, so I'm kinda assuming these are ICRs. They are really good though, it seems like they could handle 6 amps pretty nice, and they give me a good amount of vape time before I feel it's somewhere below 3.5 volts. Before I used these cells though, I've been exclusively using the Black Efest 2250 IMR High drains exclusively with my setup, and these are very good batteries for a SLR setup too.
