Either works. I think it comes down to personal preference and skill level. Box Mod are a little bit "No brainer" if you will. Where as Mech Mods take a little more "Know How".
I would recommend an eleaf iStick or my personal fav the Sigelei 50W. Its a litte more money than the eleaf but I like the one I have! Seems to work just fine with my Tugboat clone, built it down to 0.3ohm and now running it on 0.5ohm w/ 24 ga Kanthal and vapes Great!!

The iStick 50W is a pretty nice choice. If you're looking for a bit more power, I'd step up to the Sigelei 150W or the IPV3. Both are pretty good choices. Also is the Mini IPV 70W, which I haven't had any personal experience with, but looks pretty nice, and probably performs pretty decently.

Other options are to have one commissioned (you can look on Reddit or other various sites). You can look into the Truck Mod, or other lesser-known boxes, if you want something that's a bit more unique. Also, Hammond-style boxes can come in a number of colors/coatings, some of which look really neat.

Regulated box mods are definitely safer than mechs, and easier to work with.
Mechs take a great deal of knowledge regarding battefy safety and ohm's law, and while regulated mods do too, they do a lot of the work for you.

Susan has a wonderful post with links to a bunch of safety blogs, I hope she'll chime in with it here. It would do you great to read up on what to do vs. what not to do.

The iSticks in 20/30/50w are great entry level boxes. They're small, cheap, and pack a punch.
IPV make two different minis, 30w and 70w. Higher price point, but they're great devices.
My personal favorites are Sigelei boxes. They have some minis as well, 30w and 50w. They end up being a little more expensive than IPV watt for watt, but I like the construction and finish better. The 30w also has a feature to bypass the chip and run it as a mech mod.

for beginning I would go variable but that's really dealers choice and how experienced you are with electronics. It really depends on what your wanting to build. My personally I would get something that could handle any build. Your wattage gets divided up depending on how many coils you're building. Example 60 watts on a dual is 30 per coil. On a quad is 15 per coil and so on. I wouldn't .... around. my personal favorite I use everyday is the smy god 180s. I never use more than 100 watts or so but it runs 3 18650s in series. On average I run 60 to 80 watts and I get over 3 days without a charge. I love it. It is big but easily fit's in my back pocket. It's a super safe device to so long as you use the same 3 paired batteries. Never mix and match. That's with anything that runs in series.

I suppose I shouldn't have said decent. It's all a matter of preference. I know the coil is a very important aspect. I only say decent because to me a decent cloud is what I get from a .07 ohm coil with a single 18650 mech. That's decent. An insane cloud comes from stacked 26650s with a .03 ohm coil. Although I would never ever ever recommend this to anyone ever. Very dangerous. I prefer high wattage because I can build a super safe half ohm and run at 80 watts or so all day long with no issues. I also like a warm vape and no matter what you build you won't get it with 30 watts

Fair enough. It really is all subjective.
I'm a fan of high wattage as well, and I love a ridiculously hot vape.

I have a Lemo with a 2 ohm coil that hits 40-50w on a regular basis. I'm constantly amused by how my cloud chasing friends can't handle it.

Okay but here is the problem, if you need to give advice to someone who is not experienced in building you need to moderate what YOUR preference is. Recommending a 180w device does nothing for a new beginner. I can hit that same hot cloud of yours with a well built coil, but the OP is not asking for a cloud machine..

Recommending a simple small form box mod that has an internal rechargeable batter via USB port is where this thread should be. If the OP wants to upgrade later on to a 100-150 watt box then great. Just try to think the OP is looking for something to start with..

Agreed. Sorry got a little off track. I just wish someone would have talked me in to a high wattage device before I ended up with 20 Lol. My god mod goes down to 5 watts btw. Even has ego threading which is pretty funny. I would recommend at least a 50 watt mod. My sigelei mini 50 was a decent place to start for me. Only fires down to .3 ohms though

Completely agree with this! i would love seeing someone with an EVOD on a G180 ahah.
Right on brotha, yeah 50w iStick or even Ipv Mini or Segelei if you wanna go with replaceable batts OP!

Daniel Smith +1 too a good guy! Knows his clouds and his people too!
Cheers :toast:

Once more reason I was recommending higher watts. If you get something hitting the way you prefer on say a 30 watt device, but your having to vape at 30 watts you are going to start noticing a drop after a while and you have no where to go with it. On higher wattages you can simply crank it up a little bit instead of popping in a new battery. Just from personal experience. I love not having that ceiling to deal with.

I am not recommending the 30 watt either, the 50 is a good start again I included the Segelei or IPV, The only reason I suggested the iStick is if the OP does not want Replaceable batts, charger and so on.

:)

Thats a fair point. The iStick 50w is half the price of a Sigelei, but you'll need to factor in authentic batteries and a charger for the Sigelei.

A mech is slowly starting to sound like the way to go.
