I am visiting my in-laws for x-mas and I brought along a spare ego + mini nova for them to try since they are life-long smokers. My Mother-In-Law was the only one who expressed any interest so I lent her the spare . . but I can see already it's too intimidating for her even though I gave a simple overview+demo. She seemed pretty excited about it - but the ego has just sat on the window sill for 2 days untouched.

If I were to order something for her on-line - what do you think would be a good set-up? She is in her mid 60's, 1.5 pad smoker - probably since she was a teenager. She is price-sensitive so I'm reluctant to get her a disposable . .once she hears they cost $8-10 each - she would never buy another one. It also can't be messy or too hard to use. I can't see her even wanting to replace the head in a T2, for example. Whatever I get her, I have to get her enough supplies to last her until she is sold on the idea . .if she, for example, ran out of cartridges in a week she'd probably just go back to smoking vs ordering more on-line . .which, in and of itself, is a bit intimidating for her.

Is there anybody on the board using e-cigs that fit (or did fit) this description? Is there a device/set up out there that you could recommend?

Talk to her then maybe go to Smokeless Image site and look at the volts, the 78 mm ones have almost double the life of the shorter ones and are not much bigger. They sell prefilled cartos that are reasonable as far as prefilled go, they have an 808 connection and if she does decide to stick with it and wants something more the size of an ego later, they have their ego styled batteries that are all 808 so she can continue using what she already has. They have great customer service.

I think there is no way that I could have bypassed the learning curve, size-wise.... Blu to V2/V4L 808's, ego sized 808 from CigEasy,

Rivas, Twist/Spinner, Provari.

I would not have been comfortable with the ego size when I started. Now they feel tiny...

At least 2 cig-sized batteries, with prefilled cartos and a bottle of the same flavor juice to top off the cartos.

Even knowing she may soon outgrow them, some people don't, I don't know that some of us can just skip the steps......

Like quitting cigarettes, what ecig she uses is what she wants to do, not what we think she should do.....

Wish her luck from another 60+ ex-smoker...... I still have all of the above sizes hanging around here..... none of them were a waste

of time or money because they worked for me......

Ah well I know the type anything and everything is too complicated. I myself am interested in finding the holy grail easy rig for a few like that. They can be as young as late thirties and think everything is too complicated. Motivation is key for that personality. What the world needs is a small automatic auto feeder with an auto battery that isn't going to cost big bucks, till then motivation is required :D
Wish I had an answer???? Will keep reading perhaps someone else has one... an answer that is...

Yeah, this is what I'd recommend. The Volt kit with the 78mm Volt. Go with the manual battery. The X2 with a Kanger T2 is also a good option, she can refill at her liesure and it's pretty simple.

My wife and her mother are smokers also but they only use my ego+kanger sometimes when its "ready". ive offered my space ego battery and CE clearo for free to them but they dont want it.

they say that its too confusing and hard to clean/fill/dryburn/charge it themselves so they just stick to the analog cigarettes.

and that is the main big issue with this e-cig business - its too complicated for old people (not all ofcourse) and most of women/girls.

Ive thinked sometimes by myself that 2 years ago we didnt have this kind of "easy setup" like ego battery + ce5/kanger/vivi's . Now we do.
BUT whats its like in 2 years from now? :D

I agree that I couldn't have bypassed the 808's. They were an expensive introduction to vaping for me, but the v2 is what got me off analogs. I think I used my v2's very happily for about 2 weeks while I watched videos on youtube and that's what made me step up. I was exhaling vapor but the people w/those 'big' ecigs were exhaling VAPOR. I was off the analogs and wanted to 'step up' to something bigger and better which led me to the ego-t. And then the ego twist. And then the kgo vv passthrough. and then the yj lavatube 1.5t. And then, Oh wait, that's where I am now.

Looking back on my progression I don't think I could have skipped the 808's. They had crappy battery life but they felt 'right' in my hand back at the beginning.

Riva 510 kit at liberty flights.

I'm not sure if they still have the atomizer starter kit, but the carto one is fine too. I started with that and haven't looked back. Eventually I started using cartos and CE3's, but I still think atomizers are good for a beginner.

Smokeless image is good too, but eventually beginners are going to switch to a bigger battery anyways. Plus the battery life of smaller batts might cause some issues with beginners. I currently use Smokeless image batteries once and a while, but I prefer the ego minis to them. My girlfriend started with the ego minis and CE3's and she is still vaping after a month.

I guess I'm sort of atypical (although maybe not for this board) . .but I tried exactly 2 blu disposable ecigs before I bought an Ego Twist + Kanger t2. 2 weeks later, I received my DIY juice supplies. Somewhere in between, I bought another couple hundred dollars worth of extra batteries, juices to try, replaceable heads, a few different clearos to try, etc.

I have to say, though, that the Blu's were good. If they weren't, that probably would've been the end of it. I just couldn't bring myself to throw 1 or 2 of these hunks of metal into the landfill every day. Seems so wastefull.

Based on the advice here I am going to take a hard look at the Volt and probably get her the 2 battery kit with 78mm batteries and maybe 10 boxes of cartridges. From what I've read and the videos I've seen, that should last her at least a month. I think it's going to be key that she not run out of supplies before she gets hooked on vaping or she'll just go back to cigs. If she ends up not using it I'll just pick it up this summer . .I can always use the cartridges and it might be nice to have a small size pv for either myself or to give away to somebody else.

Thanks for all the advice and keep it coming. I'll probably wait until I get back home to place the order - so plenty of time to still consider other options. The Volt looks like just the thing, though. I have to say it's probably a 50/50 chance that she sticks with it but she's done so much for our family and is such a great lady . . .it's worth it to take a shot.

I don't like suggesting anything less than a Twist, and some type tank like a clearomizer, or a cartomizer tank. I started with a v2 and was very displeased with how often I had to charge the batteries, and those pre-filled carto's get really expensive in a hurry. You are also limited on the juice flavors and quality level. Well, that's my 2¢ anyway.

Smokeless Image has the eGo sized batteries too...650, 900 and 1300 mAh sizes...and they are very good! They are called X2 and are available in manual and automatic.

I do think some people accustomed to smoking many years are a bit more comfortable with automatic at least initially. Basically SI offers the very best option, IMHO, with everything you need to be successful right on their site, for a beginner. And some people stay there, there's no reason not to, really if you like it!

easy to use, semi disposable and not messy?

ego 350 mah mini battery's with stardust type clearomizers.the clearomizers are very simple to fill. just tilt the thing and drip into it. no needle tips or anything needed. small, manual batteries and if the clearo goes bad just pitch it. Cleaning them is as simple as rinse them out and dry burn it then pop in new juice. the 350 mah battery's last me the better part of a day on full charge. I only have two and kind of wish i had 3 , just because some days im a vapeatron.

I would say the Volt also. Just remember, you can give her the tools, what she does after that is really up to her. Hopefully she will she will try them and become interested enough to put the time into learning more. I would LOVE to be able to get my stepmom to start vaping, I know it will never happen. :(

I wish you all the best!

I went ahead and purchased her a volt 2 battery kit and 5 boxes of cartridges. I wanted to get more but I was afraid to buy a whole bunch of juice she didn't like. I got 2 of the variety packs and a pack each of menthol, mint and ry4. I think that will give her enough of a start for her to decide if she wants to buy more or not.

I totally hear you about the "horse to water" bit. I haven't pressured her in the least to use the EGO - just explained how to use it and gave it to her. I haven't even told her that I realize she hasn't used it. This package will arrive after we're gone so it will be totally up to her whether to try them or not. My father-in-law says he would like her to try e cigs so I'll let him take care of any cajoling.

The horse has been led . .we'll see if she drinks :)

Thanks to everybody for the advice - I think the Volt is definitely a great beginner vaping device - the reviews are great and the pricing is really good. I'm also going to send my MIL a link to SteelJan's YouTube video about the Volt - I think she would identify a little better with SteelJan than Grimm Green :)

She's in her mid 60's. You're going to make a lot of enemies on this board saying that. :D

Hey I almost resemble that remark. LOL. But understand the OP's question. I wasted a lol of money on mother-in-law. Should have just bought a Blu disposible and been done with it.
