Best way to clean brass top cap?

I got ambitious one day and removed my top and bottom caps and buffed them on a buffing wheel attached to a bench grinder. After I was happy with the shine, I sprayed a bunch of coats of clear lacquer to protect them. It's been at least three months and they still look the same as day one.

If you want to try it, just don't make the mistake I did and put heavy coats on them - they'll turn milky white if you spray too heavy. I removed the coating on a wire wheel and redid them using 5 super light coats. oh, and don't spray the inside thread parts, just in case.
