Best way to get just a little more ohms

I rebuilt my first coil on a Kanger T3S last night. I'm really excited because it wasn't too hard and it works better than factory fresh (less leaking, better tobacco flavor). I did six wraps with 30 gauge Kantal on a 3mm silica wick and added two 1mm flavor wicks on top. I've only tested the ohms using my MVP 2, but it's reading 1.6-1.7. According to my chart, that's about 8 watts on a 3.7v eGo-C.

But 8 watts is a little too hot for most of my flavors and I don't want to risk burning the wick again, and I want to get to 1.8-2 ohms next time. What's the best way to go? An extra wrap? Lower gauge value? Or maybe even try a different wick material? Can cotton give a better flavor and take a little extra heat?

As well as increasing the wire gauge or adding a wrap, you could also increase the diameter of the thing you are wrapping on.

This will give a larger diameter coil, which means more wire for the same number of wraps, which will increase your resistance.

I frequently build 1.3-1.4 ohm coils for use on unregulated mods, and yes they are a little hot to start with, but for the majority of the battery life, they give me the vape I prefer. I suppose it's a question of experimentation to see what works best for you.

A microcoil might be a good option here.

With 30 gauge Kanthal wrapped around a 1/16th inch drill bit, each coil will be .2 ohms. So, if you wanted a 2 ohm coil that would be 10 wraps. 1.8 ohm coil would be 9 wraps.

Microcoils are a bit harder to make and get right, but they're a LOT easier to predict what your final ohm reading will be before you start.

Rebuilding my kanger coils I use this almost exact method.

A 5/64 drill bit to wrap on, 10 turns of 30 gage kanthal. Comes out to about 2 ohms every time. Wicked with cotton.
Works great @3.7vdc.

I think you should give cotton a shot. In my experience you can run cotton wicked heads at more power because they wick more juice to the coil keeping it cooler. I liked my silica wicked heads at about 6w but prefer my cotton wicks at 8-9w, and the cotton wicks pump out more vapor for me. It does take a little bit of experimenting to get the right amount of cotton in the coil but once you find it your heads work so much better.

Also an extra wrap or 2 is worth trying, if you think it is taking to long to head up those coils get some 32ga. Or you could just fire it for a second or so before you take a hit to warm the coil up. I do that with my kayfuns now on the first drag to warm them up and every drag after that i just fire it normally as the coils are already warmed up. When I pick up my PV i just fire it while lifting it to my mouth, its almost second nature now.

I agree. Touching wrap coils (be they micro, nano or anything else) are easier to wrap consistently to a desired resistance. Might be worth a try Melvinthedude.

If you want a great video about how to wrap a touching wrap coil, one of our fellow ECFers has a great one posted on youtube. This video helped give me my 'aha' moment when it came to wrapping consistent touching wrap coils.



Just a point, you do not need a torch to anneal the wire, you can use a regular lighter. Also, the jig in the video is awesome, but you can just use a 1/16th drill bit and get similar results.

I just made my first micro coil :)
I use miniPT2 on EVOD 1000 USB .

Using 1.6mm drill bit,wraped 9 times 0.25mm kanthal and get 2.0 ohms. Also using cotton.

Difference from stock coil - more taste and hotter vapor. So I'm happy at the moment because I did it and nothing gone wrong :)

Question - is the vapor hotter (slightly,not much) because of the micro coil ? (more space to heat the juice)
