betelgeuse burning

Kent, I have noticed the same thing! I love the Betle, I originally got the 15mil and right away ordered the 30 mil. Running it in a Protank 2 1.8 ohm coil on the Itaste MVP v2. I can't vape it above 3.3-3.5 volts without getting a scorched taste of a bad coil.... And it sucks because I love the flavor! I wonder if making it an 80vg20pg mix and cutting down on the sweetener would help? The higher vg may replace the sweetness factor. I really do love it but am reconsidering ordering more because of this issue.

I get the same thing with both NT fruits on my beloved Evods. It's like burnt metal. Sometimes after a few hits. It's like a spicy burnt metal. I even tried taking really small hits and letting the coil rewick between hits.

I've only gotten it once on rebuilt cotton though, but that was after a day and it wasn't as bad. I currently have Gravity in a dripper at around 10W for two days, no problems.

Matt, does your Trident have a flavor wick? I think that is the most likely culprit.

I think that since the fruits have less sweetener than the other juices, that's not the issue. The other thing that the fruits have might be sweetner, or maybe one particular fruit flavor might get caught in the flavor wick and then sits on the wick.

I don't think it is the difference of watts between RBAs and Kanger heads, as I've tried different watts with RBAs. The variable would be the flavor wick.

I think I am going to revise the equipment recommendations on both Betelgeuse and Gravity - I am going to take them off the list of liquid I would recommend for a newer vaper due to the fact that they can be harder on coils due to the sweetener. Not my favorite thing to do, but it's the right thing to do I believe. In the end, if you are still depedent on stock coils - stock coils are EXPENSIVE and (if you are like I was when I was on stock coils) you want your investment to last as long as possible.

Totally appreciate the feedback - I wish it was a case of "just remove the sweetener" but - honestly - I'd get lynched by the RDA/RTA crowd if I changed the recipe.

I have added a device specific recommendation for clearomizers... I don't want people who are newer to vaping wading into the unknown.

Thank you fellas for bringing this to my attention... I know Kevin has been struggling with it for a week or two, and I tried to help via PM...

I am going to bust out a protank and some stock heads and see if I can reproduce it, until then, better safe than sorry as far as the recommendation.

Another possible culprit is the type of sweetener - not just the quantity. The type is specific to those two liquids. It's unavoidable because that particular blend of sweetener provides the taste you love, I dare not remove it - but it's problematic for coils in clearos. All good, testing continues - always a work in progress!

Kent, wanted to give you an update. So I rebuilt the coil in my Protank 2. 28 gauge with a 6 wrap and on the MVP 2 it's reading 1.4 ohms and I'm vaping at 9 watts annnnnnnddddd Eureka! The taste is back that I love. No issues. Thanks for the help!

Excellent! I think I am going to leave that warning up for newer vapers though - it does have a tendency to gunk up coils faster than some of the other liquid that doesn't contain that specific sweetener.

So glad I found this thread. I've been having the same issues with both Gravity and Betelgeuse. I love the flavor of both, but I keep getting burnt, odd tasting vapor quite often. I though it may have been the air pressure in my protanks (I'm fairly new, so I don't even know if that's possible! Lol). I'm also using stock heads. Looks like I'm gonna be diving into building my own! Good thing I just watched a video the other day about building for the protanks! Now I'm so excited to see I'd it makes a difference!!!

Hey Tasha!~ I noticed your post in another forum and had one of those *damn, I wish I could respond* moments. I kind-of had to rest on my laurels until you wandered down to my neck of the woods since I am limited in the areas where I can provide support.

Stock heads are a mess. The reality is - the are mass produced in China, and like everything mass produced, there is a "accepted rate of failure." They are notoriously inconsistent. The single best investment you can make is learning how to wrap your own microcoil and rewick with organic cotton balls. I know you love the flavor, but one of the inherant problems with sweeter liquids is the buildup of carbon over time (due to the sweetener). I'd say "lets take the sweetener out" but that's like to be one of the reasons you enjoy the liquid so much! ;) So, in lieu of the fact that we can't reduce or eliminate the culprit, the best solution is to find a low-cost work-around... in this case, wrapping your heads is *much* less expensive than stock heads... *and* the experience is incrementally better. I can't wait for you to report back with "WOW - I had no idea what I was missing." If you like the liquid now, you are going to be flipping out when you get yourself on a well-wrapped microcoil!

Tasha, just a heads up. I'm fairly new to rebuilds and have been learning as I go. Just wanted to let you know, if your going to rebuild a protank coil you want to make sure you get enough wrap on it. Because depending on the mod your running it on. If your sub ohming on a mod that can't handle it you can destroy your mod. I rebuilt it then tested it on my MVP 2 which has an ohm tester. And my first attempt showed the coil running at .4 ohms which in theory could have destroyed my mod. So even though the rebuild is fairly simple make sure you test the ohms. I think the iTaste MVP can go as low as .8 ohms for example.

In this scenario, 29gu or 30gu Kanthal might be a better solution. Question - did you happen to throw that .4ohm Protank on a mech? ;)

I did, I kept it and threw it on my Maraxus....Lovely clouds

Sweeeeet! Tellin' ya, for a clearo, that Protank can spit some vapor if you wrap the right coil. The only problem I ever had with regularity is that I would wrap them so hot that sometimes I would burn the rubber grommet. ;) Pro-tip, burnt rubber tastes really bad.

Another downside of lower resistance Protanks is that they'll "cook" the juice. If you don't empty the tank completely, the remnants will discolor the fresh juice. Run too many tanks without cleaning and re-wicking and everything starts tasting toasty.

All I have on hand right now is 28g Kanthal. I'm gonna try that and see what I get. I only have a MVP2 to test my resistance on, so I'm gonna try to keep it at 1ohm or higher. I'll let you guys know how it comes out!
