If it's not processed and added emulsifiers it's NOT American cheese.
That's sort of the definition that makes it that.
Not singles which are disgusting concoctions of oils and... something.
I wasn't talking about substitutes. But the Cheddar blend with emulsifiers that make it soft and melt and not separate like "real" cheese.
2) Might want to check your shredded cheese package for the ingredient cellulose. They grind up tree bark and put it in the cheese during processing so the shreds don't clump back together in the bag.
I shred my own cheese when I want shredded, from a sold block.
