After 10 years if appeals, she will get nothing, and she deserves nothing. People smoked, they knew it was bad. They died. Choices have consequences...

My sentiments exactly. I knew at the time that whole MSA thing was a HUGE crock o' poopoo, and now how it's come back to haunt us. Idiots.

I facepalmed when I read this news. Even if the tobacco company is liable (of which I'm not sure), the amount is ludicrous. It bears no relation to the actual harm caused (compare payouts for deaths in, say, industrial accidents due to negligence). It's a clear sign of irrational, frustrated hatred against tobacco companies.

I don't know enough about the US legal system to know whether it's the judge or jury who decide on the level of damages - but that either 12 men and women, or a judge, orders this kind of travesty of justice depresses me: it seems that the ANTZ are succeeding in mobilising all the worlds' resources of hatred and resentment against tobacco companies and smokers. And you know who's right next to them against the wall in the execution-yard.... us.

The only explanation I can come up with is that, with all our politicians (wherever we live) failing us so miserably, people have vast reservoirs of frustration, and want to make someone else suffer. Irredeemable demons are needed to receive this suffering - and smokers and tobacco companies have been re-pictured as demons.

I'm not understanding how this lawsuit is allowed while MSA exists, as I thought that contract made it so these sort of lawsuits could not be brought.

It's also a sure sign that the ANTZ rhetoric is coming to a head. It just widened the microscope that ANTZ is under after BT was under similar microscope for 50+ years. I don't think ANTZ being under microscope is the immediate takeaway, but as we haven't had many suits resulting in billions of dollars for plaintiffs, then it will likely be scrutinized on both sides going forward. And BT has already been thoroughly skewered, while ANTZ hasn't as much. Plus, it isn't just ANTZ as there are prominent people right here on ECF who seemingly have no doubt that "smoking causes thus and so" (or horrible death). It's high time that meme was undone and put into proper perspective. And if not, I feel very confident that same thing will happen with vaping, and are warning signs available to all to see how it could happen sooner than later.

Sure ANTZ gets scrutinized by us here, but I am honestly starting to see the general public tide turning on that, and either ANTZ stops overplaying their hand (and becoming less zealous) or their lies and overreach will be shot down as highly deceptive claims. Deservingly so.

No one really gets these types of awards. Juries in the US are generally made up of people too stupid to get out of jury duty. It will go through endless appeals until the plaintiffs attorneys run out of money and need to take other cases...

This, I'm afraid, is the truth of the matter. After seeing what juries have concluded in just some of the rather famous (or infamous) cases over the years, the US judicial system appears to be broken.

i for one believe smoking can be harmful. how harmful it truly is is any bodies guess considering the way the evidence has been distorted. i also know smoking can aggravate many illnesses and mess with your medications. a year smoke free has taught me that. it wasn't clear whether the smoking interfered with my meds or my meds interfered with my smoking. the case refereed to here was from Florida which wasn't a part of of the master settlement agreement nor one of the three other states that had made there own agreements. that's why it can be tried.the award will definitely be whittled down through the appeals process.

The award was so big because BT makes so much cash,a 10 million fine is chump change for BT and other big companies,i say it should have been 100 billion.

Based on what? Strictly cause BT has money?

Are you in the camp that says there was no way of knowing that smoking was harmful in the last 50 years, and BT did know, and because they didn't make that clear (aka they lied) then they are entirely responsible for all the bad things that resulted from use of their product?

I think they missed the
Govt being complicit - not banning.
Public Health for not seriously looking at the risks with SLT and now ecigs.

When I showed the Article about the $23B to a friend of mine, She got a kinda Evil Grin on her face.

And then turned and Mumbled under her breath... "He's Definitely Worth More Dead than Alive."

When I asked her what she said? She Smiled and said, "Oh Nothing. Would you like Another Cup of Tea... Dear?"
