Hey guys,

I have recently started e-cigs and so far have not had a problem. I've also gotten a friend onto them and he is vaping 24-36 mg tobacco flavour liquids mostly which I got for him from Vaporbomb, Strictly E-liquid and Heavens Gifts. He is also vaping a Nobacco 555 36 mg liquid from Vapor4life.

Now here is the problem. He is getting a black tongue. He has been vaping for 3 weeks now and so far so good except for mouth ulcers but now he has this black tongue problem. His concern is 'if vaping is doing this to my tongue what is it doing to my insides?'.

Anyone know about this black tongue side effect and its likely cause? Is it possible it is nothing more than a coincidence that he is getting a black tongue at the same time he is vaping? I've not read anything else on the net about this particular symptom.

I suggest a google search on black tongue - it is treatable and could be a symptom of other problems going on in the body. The high nic and flavors could be causing an overgrowth of nasties that can be black, brown, or even white. A dentist visit may be in order for your friend as well...just my 2 pennies, lol

Good luck to you and your friend! Please keep us posted!

I've used hydrogen peroxide as a dental rinse just about every day since I was in my early teens, I'm 32 now I've never had my tongue turn black WTH?

Ask him if he's been taking anything with bismuth in it like pepto.

Rinsing too often with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide can cause it too. My dentist discourages the use of straight peroxide to rinse for just that reason.

Steph, glad it has been fine for you. I never had any problems, either, but I switched to the non-alcohol rinse after the second or third scolding by the dentist .Black Hairy Tongue: Causes and Treatment

First I have heard of it. He needs to look into what else he is doing, eating, drinking etc. Is it like just discolored or is it sore or what.

He should probably see his doctor but I wouldn't put the blame on ecigs just yet.

Hi Shotline,

He tells me that it is just discoloured. It is not rough and he doesn't experience any discomfort or pain.

Thanks MsKellie,

I've done some research on black tongue. I've never even heard of that condition. Apparently smokers can get it but it can also be caused by certain types of antibiotics. I've never even heard of anyone getting black tongue, not even smokers, so I find it hard to imagine that an e-cig could cause it. There are no chemicals like tar or carbon monoxide that could explain it.

My friend loves his e-cigs. He was a 20 year pack and a half smoker and has not had a cigarette in 2 weeks so this concerns him a little and he is thinking maybe e-cigs are too good to be true.
