Ok so just a quick question. I have been checking out a lot of stuff about using cotton balls and boiling said cotton balls for up to 15 minutes but, is there any evidence that says this helps with anything at all or any evidence that says that the cotton ball manufactures do not heat and soak their product after they whiten them? Just curious if there is any scientific evidence out there supporting this boiling thing. I have to imagine that these things are made as clean as possible seeing as they are used to treat cuts, burns, apply/remove makeup and the like. I have been thinking about using cotton wicks but I would like to have some facts before doing so. Thanks!

I haven't seen any evidence but boiling them in distilled water will take out some of the impurities and things that are used to bleach the cotton to make it white. For me, that's the stuff I really wouldn't want to be inhaling. So, I do it as a precaution to make sure whatever it is I'm using, is extra clean. I have yet to read any specific scientific article, but common sense would tell me that if there was something impure in it, then that's an extra step to take to get it removed. If you are going to boil them, you have to use distilled water. Using tap water defeats the purpose.

Well, I never boiled my cigs...

Some say they can taste a difference on initial vaping between boiled and unboiled. Some say they don't notice any difference.

I use sterile cotton for wicks, and don't boil it. It's already sterile, right?

And I use P&C yarn for flavor wicks on Kanger style heads, and don't boil it. Been doing it that way for a year or so, no issues. (Make sure it's the 100% cotton!) I figure that after all the unknown but hazardous stuff I was inhaling with cigs, the trace amounts that might be in 1/4 inch of yarn is still a big improvement!

Peroxide? My toothpaste and mouthwash have peroxide...

Yeah i don't think it could make that big of a difference. I don't know what they treat the silicon wicks and such with nor do i know how they manufacture the plastic/metals that I use to vape with. Perhaps I'm just being overly paranoid from all of this reading about boiling, and distilled water. Next I'll have to install a clean room for builds. Thanks for all of your help.

I don't boil the sterile ones when I've used them. I mainly use 100% cotton yarn that I got at Hobby Lobby and I do boil that. It's so easy to use, perfect size for a coil built on 5/64. If you're using something smaller, remove a strand or two. I've tried it unboiled. Weird, chemical taste. Boiled? No taste. Then I read something about sizing being used in the process of it being made. I boil.

Sure, I used to smoke 1000's of chemicals. I don't anymore.

I wish I didn't have to boil it. The last batch of organic cotton I bought had puncture holes in the bag, the cotton smelled very strong like the cosmetic section of the pharmacy in which I made the purchase. I had to boil it twice to get the stench out. Next time I'll go out of my way to find a sealed bag. If you can't smell or taste anything unpleasant in your cotton, I don't see why it would need boiling. JMO.

To answer, no it's not going to kill you if you don't. But, for me, it takes 5 minutes to do it and it's done. Sometimes I don't if I'm really lazy and I don't bother with organic cotton. But, the only thing I ALWAYS boil is yarn. Not sure where you live, but I certainly don't want to vape the yarn that's been handled by the people I see in my local walmart without boiling it. Yuck.

Ew. Yeah, I had the same thought when I was in the aisle at Hobby Lobby, lol.

Ok so yup I guess it is all preference I totally agree with you guys about somebody's gross fingers and hands touching it and packaging being open. I probably would boil it also but, I meant the cotton balls and what not in perfectly sealed hypoallergenic packages. I'm definitely going to give it a try with boiling and without just to see if there is a difference I can taste. Thanks again.

One person's cotton is going to be different from somebody else's cotton.
