Probably the first Reo to ever be advertised in GQ...

"Join in on today's alternative to smoking, vaping. For the Sophisticated, discerning gentlemen vaper, a finely honed piece of bleeding-edge technology of highly stylized post modern minimalism with a muted nod to the stunning craftsmanship of Rocco inlay (will monogram at request) ...it will feel at home over a plate of Satori's in Newport to hanging with friends and a single malt after a "red sky morning" run at the cape...$2700 (batt./juice not included)

Beautiful mod Capt.!!! Your work is inspiring.
I'm wanting to chop the top completely off of mine, but I know we're limited as far as good bf 510's.
I ordered 3 different types of fat daddy 510's last night. Once I know which one I'll be using, I'll chop the top, drill it out, and do the t-cad bf mod.

Oh, and thanks for recommending the Klean Strip paint stripper. I stripped my copper vein grand last night (it had turned very dark) and the powdercoat swelled up and wiped right off to reveal a perfect tumbled raw finish. You saved me a ton of work!!! :D

Custom this is the VV I did and I cut the top off with my bandsaw and then drilled the hole to the diameter of the fatdaddy 510. You can use the 22mm ring but your door won't slide upwards because the 22mm ring is just a hair too wide. I decided not to put the 22mm ring and I just flush fitted the fatdaddy 510 without the ring.

Hope that helps

The 22mm rings are the one's above the 510's

Here is the 510 installed

Thanks Capt. That project of yours is the reason I bought a vvgrand to mod. I've studied your pics and posts for some time. Truly inspiring stuff.

My concern is, since I won't be building the top up with wood, I'll have to recess the flange of the 510 so that it's flush with the top of the mod. I'm worried that I'll run in to my switch.

I definitely need to chop this top tho, 22mm atty's hanging off the sides of the drip well makes me anxious.

The issue of running into your button is a distinct possibility and frankly you need to plan for the 510 installation first and then based on how far down you end up you can fit your button, or have you already drilled the hole for the button?
If you haven't drilled it yet then the original VV button is real small so you don't have to center your button hole on the existing VV hole. All you need to make sure is that your new hole diameter has within the existing hole (you can gain maybe about 4-5mm

The vv I'm using had the large button so the hole was already 12mm.

So I'm kinda locked in to the hole location.

I ordered the FD V3 short, the long, the V4, and the classic 510 insert so I'll have some options.

I do have another vvgrand that has the small button like the one you modded, so that might be next.

I prefer the size of a regular grand though. I'd like to install a dna in one like this:

Sure is tight in there though. I would fully waterproof it like t-cad did with his woody.

Hey Quigs I'm an airline captain buddy not a brain surgeon, my time sadly ain't that valuable  (but I do like your thinking)

Actually in retrospect I'm kicking myself for not chopping the top off it, may just make that a future retrofit with a custom 510 connector.

...about 20 yrs ago (and this is like it happened yesterday) I did 2 Christmases, one in Vancouver with my folks, then jumped a red-eye to Zurich via Heathrow for my 2nd Christmas...by the time we got to Heathrow the weather was bad (there where peeps crying)...I'm a pretty comfortable flyer, I mean come on, it's a big bus, how hard could it be?...it was dead of night and pouring rain...it was strange, the cabin crew was bolting down everything trying to act all nonchalant but you could see, in actuality they where terrified , the plane felt like it just lost air under the wings and it would just drop...then catch...I'm watching the engines and the blinky lights on the wings and wondered just how much of a safety factor did the engineers put into the main wing struts?...I had no idea a 747's wings could flex like that...by the time I could see the runway lights at heathrow we where pretty much flying sideways, then torqued straight then sideways again....the guy at the throttles sticks must have thought he was working a back-hoe...we hit hard, there was a huge bang (I thing we blew a tire, like I'm talking the wing was over the grass, we weren't even close to the center of the strip )...a bunch of the overhead racks popped open when we snapped straight , stuff was flying everywhere...it was like out of a bad movie...

I've never seen this before (and I've logged a lot of wing time)...that Pilot was given a standing "O" when we finally pulled up to the jetway...that was the one and only time I thought, holy crap, we're gonna crash...I know a lot of your job is pretty routine but then you get one of those...that's a skill I can't even comprehend...

If you're gonna shave the deck, have you thought of going hybrid?...I don't know how often you change your RDA's (you still can btw, if it's to another hybrid'd RDA)...screw the 510, it's a waste of time, money, space and even energy (v drop)...make your own custom center pins out of lead free marine brass machine screws (then soak it if you feel it necessary)...they don't leak, it's so solid the RDA literally becomes one with the Grand body...since doing it my first couple times I won't go back to a conventional 510 now...you've got the tools and skills to do it...try one.

...just saying

You know the sense of self preservation is a powerful source of energy. The guy who decided not to give us parachutes really knew what he was doing. :)
I get asked a lot "how do you handle the responsibility of all those lives you carry?" Answer is quite simple, there's only one life I try and keep alive. :D

I'll certainly try that at some stage for sure. I vape the Odin exclusively and nothing else (I have 4 of them) so it isn't like I change atties.

BTW a friend once told me there's no such thing as lead free brass. He said even marine type brass has a percentage of lead so it's machinable

I watching the engines and the blinky lights on the wings and wondered just how much of a safety factor did the engineers put into the main wing struts?...I had no idea a 747's wings could flex like that...
They design in a 50% engineering safety factor in above and beyond the requirements. And unlike some manufacturers, they actually test their designs to to the point of failure:

Now there's a perspective I can wrap my head around...:D

Your buddy is right...there's no such thing as Pb free brass, but marine brass Pb content is pretty low...about as low as that cheap 302 SS FD's 510's are made of...you only lose the Pb from SS once you hit 316, which is why few builders use it cause it's nasty on tools (Pb is mixed in as a machinists helper, it's a lubricant...and yes, it's in lower grade SS as well...but peeps don't want to hear that)...Every time I read peeps say "I won't use brass cause it's got lead" as they take a long haul on the cheap "SS" cloned RDA out of china they picked up off ebay just makes me laugh, they drank the kool-aid and there's no going back

...the good news is the Pb that gets exposed in any machining process can be mitigated by a 5 min. soak in peroxide and white vinegar (just the drug store peroxide 10%? will do)

If I get to building a mod it'll be with limited tools. Anyway I'm wondering if any of you have seem this site?

Svapiamo

They have BF connectors but they would have to be press fitted or glued. Or I guess it could be adapted to lock in. They also sell premade boxes. If I have the conversion right they aren't priced to bad. Isn't there a mod called SVA?

The pin in the BF 510 looks Brass? It needs to be Stainless Steel
If you want to make a BF mod here's the best way to make your own 510

What about zinc content?

The Zinc content?...Ah, the great Brass conundrum, hours of fun...let's explore some parallels for a sec....statistically GM produces some of the most dangerous cars in the world, (the fact that their engineers knew about the current issue for 13 yrs is another debate)...but I needed a car, so in the interest of my personal due diligence and risk management, I bought a Ford (not to say that it too isn't a piece of crap, just in my mind, slightly less crappy than a GM)...risk is a very subjective thing, peeps buy a lot of GM cars and I say, good on them but we need to keep safety prioritized and more importantly...in perspective, what if CaptSteve took leave of his senses one day and decided it'd be fun to barrel an Airbus...depending on altitude you could have a good 5 mins to ponder of all those squandered years avoiding zinc (and I'd be willing to bet there where times when you would've killed for a big 'o pile of zinc to dive into with reckless abandon...maybe even some lead too...)

I left the hermetically sealed bubble 35 yrs ago when I started gunning through 2 packs and a pint of Rye a day...no point in climbing back in now...I mean really, who knows what this vaping thing is doing to us...imagine if some scientist 20 yrs from now finds out that there's some off-gas caused by a thermo-galvanic reaction from repeatedly heating Kanthal that causes a significant I.Q. drop in lab rats?...and how do you quantify that?...I mean lab rats aren't the brightest creatures or they'd be the ones wearing the white coats and getting all the grant money from the ni-chrome industry...

I could go on for hours...pointless, circular logic, just one of the many reasons why my friends hate me.
