Box mods vs. Tubes?

I've been seeing a lot of hype about box mods, but I'm not sure I would like having something so bulky. The adjustment to the lightsaber-esque svd was slightly jarring for me.

Those of you who have them and rave about them, I'd love to know what the benefits for you are personally. And if you don't care for/hate them, I'd like to know that, too!

Yes, my VS rDNA is much bulkier than my ProVari Mini or my mech mods fitted with same toppers.

I enjoy all 3 platforms. For myself, each serves a different purpose.

My VaporShark affords me a safer regulated vaping experience with a longer battery life. If needed, I can charge it in the car during my drive.

I use my Provari Minis for day outings, but need to carry extra batteries, as I only use it in 18350 mode, now.

Love using my mechs. Even with the above, for me, there is still nothing like a well crafted mech mod in hand. I use these mainly at home, vape meets, or for very quick errands.

It's just like clothes and shoes. Different attire for different situations.

ETA: If I were to start all over again and all of the said were available, I would probably choose the VS, if I could only have one.

I switched from tube mods to box mods a few months ago and my tubes now sit collecting dust.

It really depends on the box mod in question. The fad these days is higher wattage that can be used on higher ohm builds. Sub-ohming on regulated box mods is a waste of time IMO.

For instance,

a .2 ohm coil at 13watts will put out 1.8 volts
a .5 ohm coil at 13watts will put out 2.6 volts
a 1.4ohm coil at 13watts will put out 4.3 volts

Any questions about that, there are plenty of ohms law calculators out there.

Most box mods...Hana, Hexohm, IPV are regulated like you SVD but are capable of much higher power output. I also personally, find a box mod easier to hold and some of them will use 2 batteries, giving you steller battery life.

MoDmAnDaN - I'm still slowly learning the electrical measurement system, but higher power output and longer battery life sound like pros to me. Nice to hear from a fellow Washingtonian, btw -- I'm missing the mountain something fierce.

I went from VV and mech tubes to VV and mech box mods due to battery capacity + size. Tubes were great when the equivalent of 18350 battery capacity was all I needed. I pocketed an iTaste VV v3 for years. A Provari Mini/18350 or an Atmozoo Lab 18350 were tiny and worked very well. Once I moved to 18650, tubes were less attractive. I can pocket 2600mah's in a Hana V3 more easily than a Provari with a 18650 extension, with our without an atomizer attached. When you get into multiple batteries, it gets even more weighted to boxes. A Vapor Flask or that new "God" mod can carry 2 or 3 18650's (5200 - 7800mahs) in about the same space as the Hana V3. I wouldn't want to see a tube with 2 or 3 "stacked" 18650's. It may not be of concern to many people, but where I work there isn't anywhere to charge up for 8-10 hours a day, so I'll take all the reserve I can get.

PS - I eventually went to boxes for 18350 as well. A Microstick 18350 is about as compact as I can handle, and even with an 18500 extension on it, it is smaller than a Provari Mini in 18350 mode.

Well, like they say, vape is progressive, in the beginning I didn't like box mods either, now, well have a few, and they put out 30-100 watts of power. About the size of a pack of smokes, so not really bulky, and no more incovienent than dragging a pack of smokes around, which most of us were more than willing to do.

Like them cause the stand upright and don't tip over easily. Can get some decent vape time out of later capacity batts, and can drive some serious vape power.

I love all things vape, box tube, 18650 & 26650 mechs, high amp regulated, box, tube, whatever, rba's tanked, drippers, tanked drippers.... it's all good. Main thing about portability is finding the right accessory. There are many side holsters and g cases that hold the mod and clip to you belt loop for both tube and box mods. Many jackets and vests have niffy inner pockets for storing cells, glasses and work well for vape gear too. Have a jacket that holds my scan proof wallet, my e-book, and my vaporizer. Can do the hands free pack and carry.

Start with what you like but never be surprised that what was not attractive today, may hold a gleam in you eye in a month or two.

One form factor is no better or worse than the other, and comes down to personal prefrance, or in my case, no prefrance besides it's got to kick some serious Vape Azzz.!!!! or something like that

I use a VTR and also have the LVT, I am not a spring chicken, I have arthritis in my hands and it is much easier to hang on to than the cylinder type. Nothing wrong with the others as I also have a 134 and a Vamo. they just work better for me in my hand. Also they are easier to set down. they seem more stable to me.

I have used both, tube and box mods..
but I think the winner is box mod, expecially bottom feeders(reo)..they are compact and solid boxes with good battery life and big juice "tank" (bottle inside).
I have microstick with spheroid on it. which is also nice. but for some reason I haven't got the spheroid work as I wanted it to work.

tube mods are ok, but if you want good battery life and big tank..gets too long for me. then its not a pocket friendly

Great info, folks, thank you! I'll have to check one out the next time I'm in a shop -- the boxes all look huge online but it sounds like they are a manageable size and even preferable as far as comfort goes.

They do look big online! I was shocked at how small the Hana Mini (1200mah) was when I got mine. It's maybe a touch bigger than two full-size Zippo lighters standing up next to each other.

Although I mostly use VTR box mods I do think tubes are somehow a more natural form factor. The excessive length of 18650 mods is largely due to the centre section with the button(s), display, and PCB, so there must be room for some creative design thought. Also I think clearomisers are too long, partly because of the current fad for some kind of air control at the base, but the iClear 30s is a ridiculous size without air control. An 18650 mod the length of current 18350 mods would surely attract many buyers, me included, so here's hoping someone in China is in touch with what vapers want.

I fell in love with dripping so it was just at matter of time before I started using a reo grand and mini. I'm 99.9% sure I will never use anything else. The benefit for me is the pure simplicity and dependability the reo has to offer. The fact that I have 6mls of juice right there at my thumbtip makes it practical for all day use as well as ease in mobility. But the best reason that comes to mind is the reo people are..............awesome.

As far as the size. Here is a comparison of the reo grand and mini with a pack of cigarettes. Both are very comfortable to hold. Good luck to you and I hope you find what will make you the happiest. That is what it is really all about.

It's REALLY about personal taste, but the problem is that you won't know you don't like it until you try one out, feel it in your hands, and vape on it a bit.

I bought a Reo a little while back. It's a great little mod, smaller than I was expecting it to be, but in the end, I just don't like the form factor. Now it just sits in a drawer waiting for some hopeful day in the future when I might need my backup.

When I first started into vaping I wanted the smallest, closest cigalike possible. It was sort of like I didnt want to be noticed vaping or at least stand out. You probably couldnt have given me a box mod for free at that time. The idea of going from cigarettes straight to a box mod.... no way. Fast forward to today, whether Im using a mech or a regulated its a box. They just are more comfortable in hand for me and while they appear bulky I find them easier to conceal and more practical then tubes.

I think someone already mentioned the 18650 battery size. Once you need that extra battery capacity the tubes become lightsabers. Box mods accommodate 18650s more easily.

I wish provape would make a VTR styled device accommodating up to a 24mm tank.

instead of stacking the electronics on top of the battery, a box mod is just a compact design where the electronics is put side by side to the electronics.

A further trend on that is to put the tank side by side to both of them as in the vtr.

Depends on the box.

Something like an 18650 Reo Grand is about the same LxW dimensions as a business card. Considering that size even contains a 6 ml bottle of liquids for bottom feeding an atty - and the atty no longer needs to be whopper size in order to be a juice container as well... It can easily fit in a short pocket without looking like some kind of Harry Potter wand sticking out. (And falling out.)

Personally I prefer the stick mods but the side-by-side box mods are really making me give it a second look.

My husband was *just like you* -- he was against getting a box mod in the beginning, he didn't like the "feel" of it in his hand. Same went for me. Therefore we both started with Smoktech Zmax Minis and those were still bigger than a battery pen but not as indomitable as the box mods can seem. Then I got a lead on a HoH ZNA, went to see it and tried it out... I snatched it up and we quickly realized we got a but better vape from my "box" mod (which is sort of a marriage between a tube mod and a box and runs off the DNA board) ... he decided he wanted one more powerful as well and ended up getting a Tatroe Atlas box mod for when I refused to share. He really does love it -- despite his misgivings when we were starting.

Truly, it's all subjective. People are going to champion what they personally like best -- me? I couldn't imagine myself with a mech mod (or a rebuildable tank or a dripper for that matter for the "right now" -- who knows what the future holds), but that doesn't mean it's not the ideal set up for someone else. It's all about what will fit your vape needs best of all. If you can, go visit some B&M stores -- chat with the owners, hold the devices in your hands, take one for a test-drive if they'll allow it; feel the difference of weight and cloud production, flavor, heat...ultimately only YOU know what's best for you.

I use both but lately my nemesis in 18350 mode with a kayfun has been my pocket carry most days. For the durability and size it's really tough for me to beat. My mvp is nice but put a kayfun on it and it's just too big in pocket for my taste. Now give me an mvp with a setup like the vtr that will take a kayfun and I think that's about ideal. But I haven't quite seen that combination of battery life and size.

One thing I've noticed, well about me at least, lol, the longer one vape's the more the focus becomes on the quality of the vape and not giving a crap about what it looks like or the form factor. But generally speaking, once you get into the "Killer Vape Gear" combo's, everything looks pretty damn sexy regardless of the form factor.

Frak, have a bunch of 26650 mechs, so now me 18650's seem soooo small and dainty, and reminds me of a cig-a-like, or something like that I'm just surprised that the Reo bug never bit me, it just gives me an uncomfortable feeling storing the juice inside the mod for some reason, and many of me tanks hold up to 10 ml's of juice, even have drippers with 5 ml tanks on top, so really prefer and extra batt in the box instead of juice, so more juice for the power, or something like that
