Hallo,

I've been interested in a few brass based mods, but the polished finish on most of them is really turning me off.

What type of patina can I expect a shiny brass mod to develop over time? Will it turn green? Will it patina at all?

I'm not interested in keeping it polished, so the less polished it gets the better.

Thanks for any input.

Cheers

Not every brass mod is made up of the same composition. This will vary the patina results. But you can basically expect the loss of the shiny/mirrored finish along with darkening. Haven't really seen green (just my experience) but usually the results of no polishing over long time use looks amazing IMO. Especially on mods that have the whole mix match top/bottom cap to tube look. The oils from your hands will definitely help this process move faster, so buy one, use it a lot, and enjoy :2cool:

WOW! now that's patina!! Looks antiqued or like something that has been at the bottom of the ocean for 50 years lol

Heh, yeah. Sounds like he used some special patina-izing application. For bronze we would just soak it urine and bury it the ground for a few days/weeks for a nice effect. Don't know how that would work on brass.

The best cleaner for brass is ketchup and this is not a joke I buy it to make cocktail sauce for shrimps and to clean brass works like magic it's in the acidity of the tomatoes the all secret.
The vinegar in ketchup is more acidic than the tomatoes; if you're looking for something less messy than ketchup the vinegar alone works great or you can combine it with flour or salt if you need a bit of abrasive action.

try frank's redhot, works better than ketchup on brass, and this stuff will make copper GLOW!! As a bonus it's a whole lot tastier than ketchup...

you could always ammonia vapor age the brass. http://www.whitechapel-ltd.com/ganti.html

I've been doing this to my Andromeda, will post photos when I get around to setting up some lights...

I use a pink rubber erasure on my brass Mortar. Also on my battery contacts etc. it leaves a warm glow rather than a brilliant shine. Not very often 3 times since December. The more you use it the less you need to clean it. The grooves are reachable with my erasure but I don't try as hard because it gives it some little bit of contrast. I love my brass mod very much. Over another year or two it might be a different story but patina should take time and be natural. Naval brass is supposed to be nice but I'm not an exert. I have some brass bells that haven't been handled or polished in decades and try look the same or at least they look fine.

Check this one out. One of the nicer ones I've seen done recently by a friend in a local vape group on Facebook.
