Probably packed too tight. I only read the first few pages of the thread, but it said to pack it tight, I thought.

Yeah, I used poor wording in an attempt at describing the packing in the opening thread. Wanted to edit it, but time had run out.

What I meant to convey is not to leave it wispy like one would with cotton in a traditional coil. Somewhat firmer, but not stuffed in. How much varies depending on juice viscosity, how the particular mod one's using effects the draw, and vaping style. Some trial and error is in order here.

Been reading and I bookmarked this when my 30ga kanthol came in and do my first vertical, well first coil EVER on my PT2......18 ga needle, 10 wraps (I think!) checked the ohm, stuttering between 1.8/1.9, packed that puppy with cotton... and wouldn't you know it, I screwed on a brand new PT2 that I just got in the mail and hadn't cleaned first...AURGH!!!!! A full tank of AiV Zombie Apocalypse *sniff*.:glare:

But.........this thing rocks!!!! Yep, I'll switch out the tank to a clean one, but, hey, no leaking, no gurgling, no scorched/burning rubber, and I might have to drop my nic! Vaping on a ProVari.
*Using tweezers, boiled cotton (sheet cotton used for livestock wraps), a magnifier for making fishing flies, a straight edge toe clipper*

Ok, just switched it out to a clean PT1......doing better, the weird "factory" taste is leaving, but should I just replace the cotton?

Edit: Or should I have burned the coil more than 3 times...could that be the "taste"?

If it's a metallic "off taste" is most likely the coil. Check that when dry fired it glows evenly from the inside out, and has no hot leg. And check that the wick reaches to the top of the coil...as in no coil exposed.

Had this happen a few times. Even a perfectly made micro coil can get a space created when installing it in the head.

One of the things that I like with the newer version I posted a few pages back is with the coil right up against the positive post, if a coil misbehaves after I install it, I can press it together by firing it briefly and pushing down on the top of the coil with a bit. Then test fire 5-6 times to be sure the "fix" stays.

Another thing I've found helpful is to take a small piece of fine sandpaper and knock the oxidation that's created when the coil is torched where the legs will make contact. Good electrical connection keeps the coil from getting hot at it's connection point.

Guess you cold try 9 wraps. Should get you pretty close to 1.5 ohms. Ideally, get some 30ga. Nichrome and 11-12 wraps should put you right at 1.5 ohms.

1.8 should be good depending on your mod. I like to run these around 11-15 watts depending on juice.

Depending on what PV you're using, amps may be limited. Just something to keep in mind.

Thanks, BSD :)

The mod I'm currently using is a ProVari, also have an iTaste 134, eVic, SID, MVP2, the usual suspects, and vaping juice from Alice in Vapeland for the last 5 months, seems 1.5-1.8 ohms at lower w or v brings out the best in it.
I didn't even realize but it's been one year today that I quit smoking and started vaping, guess now it can be the day I wrapped my first coil too!
Will definitely get some Nichrome, this coil really didn't come out that bad, I'm kinda proud of myself, lol! No shorts, no scorching, no leaking/gurgling, changed out the tank to a clean one and it's got to be the wire that's causing the off taste, it's not there much anymore, but the nic is sure hitting me. The taste and vape is far better then the stock Kanger heads.

*this is so cool!*:thumb:

Good mods for a year in Nini. Evic just a tad underpowered for these. Provari is what I use for the rare times I'm not hitting the Billet Box. Provari at around 5v with a 1.8-2 ohm coil is my sweet spot.

Hey, at least you use a nice thin juice primarily. I have to tweak my builds for Boba's, 50/50 HHV blends, and the thinner Zombie Apocalypse juice. Keeps me busy lol.

I tried one of these last night. I got gurgling, so I added more cotton, which somehow led to flooding. Obviously I'm missing something important. It was late and my husband seemed frustrated with the kids, so I put it away to mess with later. What I was getting around the gurgles was good though, so I will definitely experiment more.

When you are adding cottons around the coil do it in a circular motion while pressing it down to stuff cotton around the coil as much as you can. This should eliminate the gurgling which is definitely due to not having enough wick to block the liquid from flooding inside the airweay. Good luck.

Unreachable made a couple of good points, but try not to overpack the cotton, or you could choke off your juice supply. It's a fine balancing act, but very worth it if you can get it working, IMO anyway. :)

I still love these things in ProTanks, and have my PTs sitting around with vert micros as backups for my new toy, a Russian RBA. I switched because, frankly, the PTs just don't have the capacity I need, since I vape around 8 ml/day, sometimes nearly 10 ml (and 3 or 4 refills a day on a PT, especially when you do a bit of driving on a day to day basis, is kind a bit annoying...). Yes, I'm a heavy vaper...  :vapor: Still, It's better and much, much cheaper than my old 'analog' habit which was 1.75 to 3 ( ) packs of Swisher Sweets Little Cigars (the cigarette style packs). That said, I'm still following this thread, because these things are definitely close to a full blown RBA in quality of vape.

At any rate, keep on vaping, everyone! :vapor:
