I like to leave that negative leg such that it's a bit more than halfway to the cup from the wick. Kind of work the cotton in the void at a bit of an angle. Can't hurt either way, so long as it's not where it can short.

Got my 30 and 28ga Kanthal in today. Played around with the 28ga over 1/16" bit, but had to leave before I could finish it. The Kanthal seems more difficult to work with than the Nichrome. The Nichrome stays at the diameter I wrap it, whereas the Kanthal tends to open up a bit in diameter. Think I'll try wrapping it before annealing it this time around. Kanthal seems to have less springiness to it, making it different to work with.

Hey BSD, I've already commented on this coil, but after a week I gotta tell ya, whatever made you think of this was simply amazing. I have put this in mini pro tanks, mini pro tank II's, 5 aro's, 5 evod's and one ismoka mega. It is the most productive coil EVER. And flavor? Damn. Just amazing. Vapor production is almost nuts and it doesn't matter what it runs on; SVD, Silver Dragon or a ego twist. I can't say enough about this coil.

GOOD JOB!

Made a 28ga 12 wrapper over 1/16" bit for 1.8ohms. Also used the extra O-ring to restrict the flow a little along with a little less dense pack. Have to see how this fares over time.

Draw is looser in a ProTank than with the 18/30ga coil, but this is also working nicely. Actually like that the larger coil has less sputtering/volcanic action. Can't give a flavor comparison since I put in some fruity juice that I needed to get rid of. Draw is just a little too loose for my liking, but I can fix that.

Build is definitely more difficult as this just fits. Very little spacing from the bottom, so have to really pay attention to centering and the thicker wire makes it difficult to get the coil in place without messing the coil up. Good thing is the coil itself should last a very long time.

Thanks dbev!

Was just looking for a better alternative to carto's in my Billet Box mod and it hit me while pulling apart a carto for parts.

Figured there must be something to the micro coil craze once I seen that thread with like 700 pages. Have since seen others such a Cyrus have been using a similar set up in the Russian atty, so this isn't uncharted territory. But hey, it does turn cheapo Chinese gear into vaping beast on the cheap.

Way to go BSD!!! was excited to try this out, and holy poo!!! so far so good..

coil landed at 3.2ohms after cooking it with some map gas...

not bad at all to put together, ground wire travels down just about half a mm away from the main coil...

apparently i don't seem to own cotton balls,,, but the cotton from both sides of 1 q-tip was more than enough.. and that seemed to hold about 7 drops of fluid to fully prime it.

NEAT-O

sure as heck, vapor comes out!!! Great work BSD, this is really cool... thanks a bunch for sharing this!!!

Haven't tried this...yet, but will soon. Since this configuration has so much more wick from the coil to pull from than the standard horizontal wick, perhaps a smaller juice opening will allow a less dense cotton pack while still supplying adequate juice.

Pic shows the added O-ring at the bottom of the wick slot. Still leaves a nice size hole.

Let us know if this works well for you, and what PG/VG juice you're using if anyone tries this.

Confirmed. This works, and works extremely well. Coil sat overnight, and was good from first pull on, with just the right amount of juice to the coil. 65/35 PG/PG juice. All heads except my Boba's Bounty get this treatment on next fill.

absolutely fascinating...protank and 30 kantal on the way .my blunt needles are a little to thin 03 instead of 04 ...will use a 16th drill bit and find a nail a little smaller. I see u are using this system on bottom coils . so I will try that.
do you see any reason not to try it on a top coil like the vivi nova ? I will defenetly try that to when my stuff comes in .

Probably would work on a top coil too. Though, if it runs dry, its new cotton time.

Here's a pic of a just assembled 28ga 12/13 wrap on 1/16" bit @2.4ohms. Official Billet Box specs:)

Didn't think I could fit it, but it came out perfect. I find the 1/16" coil to be a little bit too airy in a ProTank, and know it would be even airier in my BB atty. So...if one looks carefully inside the positive connector pin, there you'll see a tiny piece of Pyrex capillary tube inside with a dab of JB Weld holding it in place to reduce airflow.

Awaiting vapemail with some HHV Vaping Chimp to give it a test drive.

Is there any specific cotton brand I should be looking for to do this? Don't want any cotton tastes =(

I've seen sterile cotton balls to be highly recommended. I've been happy with Q-tip brand Q-tips.

Take a look at post 88. That little ring allows for a less dense pack, and should minimize any cotton taste. There is always a little at first, but fades quickly. YMMV as in all things vape related.

i did my coil round a 1/16th bit and yah, a bit to airy.... there is a lot you can tweak with this method, I'm stoked on it!! I think i'll give it another go tonight with a smaller/tighter coil and maybe a bit of cotton between the kathal ground return leg and the coil to help keep that leg colder being surround by juice.. but the wicking on this one is perfect, this is a really great mod BSD.. your awesome!!!

Wow thanks Doug. Means a lot coming from the maker of the fine swiss watch otherwise know as the Bilett Box.

Yeah, that coil diameter does matter. While the two 1/16" coils I made work well, the flavor just doesn't seem to pop like it does with the slightly smaller coil. Plenty of vape, just doesn't seem as dense if that makes sense. Air/fuel mixture kinda thing I suppose.

Also, on the BB tank, I like to refill if I can when it gets about 2/3rds empty. If the wick comes out of the juice too much when tilted, it looses that vacuum balance and can sometimes flood.

I built one of these tonight in a Smokeless Image T3 (Kanger clone, I believe?). 30 ga Kanthal A1, approximately 2.5 Ω, around a 1/16" drill bit. Clean hole, off the positive post ~1/32" - 3/64". Tested the coil on my SI X2 1600 mAh (I can't wait 'til my Innokin MVP v2 comes in Tuesday...), glowed beautifully, center out, and fairly quickly, considering it's a 'basic' eGo clone. Thoroughly primed the wick, let it sit upright for roughly fifteen minutes. Vaped nice and clean, draw was, for me, almost spot on, flavor was great, rock solid throat hit, slightly more vapor than the original setup... I took pics of everything but the coil proper (didn't think about it 'til it was already in place), and will post 'em in about an hour or so (since I'm a bit... Occupied with RL as soon as I finish this post... )...

Everything was great... For all of about ten minutes. :?: Then I got a very slight cotton burn taste. Let it sit for a few, and the taste, for the most part, went away, but was still there in that subtle, acrid bitterness on the finish of each vape.

I've concluded that it is, indeed, possible to overpack the cotton. I do tend to... Overdo some thing like that, from time to time... I will be re-packing the cotton tomorrow (with pics!), since everyone else'll be asleep, and I don't want to wake them up...

Anyway, though, slight whoops on my part aside, this is a great technique to wake up tired old clearos. I can't wait 'til I get this set up right and ready to go!

Like BSD said, many people use CVS sterile rolled cotton. Walgreens organic cotton balls are another choice. And Whole Foods also sells organic cotton balls. I use WF organic cotton balls, but I boiled the cotton first for 20 min in distilled water in a pyrex bowl in the microwave, then let it dry. Only tastes like cotton for the first few vapes. SOME cotton tastes really, really bad, so if it tastes real bad, try another type of cotton.

Trayce you can try it the way you said if you dont have skinny tweezers available. I dont see a prpblem with that working. Just remember the cotton will expand so dont stuff it in there.

Thanks so much! Got my 30g Kanthal today so am about to dive in!

I like to leave that negative leg such that it's a bit more than halfway to the cup from the wick. Kind of work the cotton in the void at a bit of an angle. Can't hurt either way, so long as it's not where it can short.

Great tips but you and those darn jewelers glasses that let you see everything like it's under a microscope! :D I'll be lucky if I can even see the negative leg once that coil gets lowered into the cup. I'm going to slip some cotton between it and the coil before I install it (and take out my contacts so I can see better!). :D

Interesting. Do you notice a difference in taste? What made you initially use Nichrome over Kanthal?
