poland, and the brassy lands of google
Finally had a chance to read through this thread, and nice work Big Screen! I see some close similarities to the AO ceramic Birdhouse wick, which Dan mentioned awhile ago. Still this is different in many ways.

One small point to clarify, a 1/16" bit is 1.6mm (also the size of a 16G needle (1.651mm)) and a 18G needle is 1.27mm, not 1mm. Since this largely determines the airflow, it translates quite well to the size of the air inlet on a genisis top cap. From this experience, one knows there is quite a difference in volume between the two.

Also, it would simplify things if you guys would just face up and speak in metric terms!

I gave this a try today, I must say it works very well. Nice warm vape, lots of vapor. 28 ga kanthol 10 wraps, on a 3/64 screwdriver. Peaches and Cream yarn wick. 1.2 ohms

As a newbie to vaping in general, and total virgin to fiddling with original design of equipment, I found this tutorial to be really easy to follow. A plain old eGo battery with an Evod tank with this coil and I've just had my first 'ah ha' vaping experience. Found flavor that I'd expected from the juice but never quite tasted. Spearmint that seems to be dripping on my tongue. Thanks BSD.

BSD, I have to tell you, this setup ROCKS. I had a diy flavor that was close but not quite there. I changed over to this coil and WOW. the vapor is excellent, the flavor pops a lot more and I am extremely happy with this juice that I thought I may have needed to tweak a little but the coils fixed it. Great Job.

I just noticed one thing with this build. The sound it makes reminds me of this.
Sitting in the dentist chair and when they put the suction in your mouth to suck out the liquid, I can make it sound just like that.
Its funny in a weird way, but I am so happy you came up with this. Every rebuild from now on in my protanks is going to be like this. IT AMAZING how well this this works. and the flavor and vapor change is off the hook.

I will try and post pics of my build later so we can compare notes.

Great to read it's working good for you Hoofhearted and Cornbread Fred!

Yea, great flavor was the first thing that wowed me too. Not a subtle difference, but a eye opening difference.

Hitting that balance of juice flow to the coil, airflow, and wattage such that the distinctive sizzle and crackle one gets from a fresh cartomizor can be tricky. I've used enough of these now so that I can actually hear when I've got a build "tuned" if you will just right.

BTW, I still have the very first coil still in use. Has been dry burned, taken it's ultrasonic bath, and re-wicked numerous times. Keeps on trucking.

Ok, here is my step by step version of this build. It works amazing.

28 ga kanthol 12 wraps on a 3/64 mini screwdriver.
20131201_090520.jpg

keep the legs long and bend down opposite each other.
20131201_090700.jpg

remove from screwdriver and torch coil.
20131201_090829.jpg

insert cotton ball wick under bend for the top leg.
20131201_091039.jpg

insert screwdriver back into the coil and place in the bottom section. Use the screwdriver to help keep it centered.
Situate the top coils so they are not facing the "V" cutout on the coil assembly.

more to follow..

continued:

place the coil assembly into the base screw. keep screwdriver in to assist wrapping the wick. wrap the tails of the wick around the coil and pack into the deck of the coil assembly
20131201_093103.jpg

notice the see through down the tube. no obstructions.
20131201_093329.jpg

load up your juice, and let it sit for at least 10 minutes so the juice can wick into it. or, preload some juice before putting the "chimney" on the top of the wick.

VAPE ON..

Nice build and pics HH.

Tricky part with that wick tucked between the leg and coil looks to be re-wicking. KGS posted a twine method that may help when time comes to replace the wick. Interesting variation with the wick wrapped around the outside of the cup. Looks like that may be a good way to help regulate flow. Over wicking and flooding can sometimes be a problem, so that looks like a nice tool to add to the tool box.

I generally just refill my tanks when about 2/3rds empty to prevent the dreaded recurring gurgle. Clearing the coil by flicking out any excess juice when it has sat for a while always works, but becomes more f an issue when nearing empty. Lets us know how your set up behaves towards empty HH.

Thanks for that dan, I'm still working on it, I haven't got it down yet. I'm going to need to wash it again. I have an idea to make a paper thin sheet with some of it while wet and let it dry; for my carto style core wrap I do. I'm currently back on my Kleenex viva core wrap and rayon wicking because it works so well. I will be experimenting with it more as time goes on. Problem is I only have one rba right now so it has to work unless I have time to mess with it.

If you need some 3 mm silica I have 40 feet of it! Got it 2 weeks before I switched to cotton. :(

Oh you haven't heard me talking about it? There is more in the Vcore thread! It resembles the carto core wrap material. Its the really soft and absorbant viva "paper" towels. More like a actual cotton based towel. Which I also have pictured in the Vcore thread. I am making a rebuildable carto essentially. Works exactly the same. I get no off flavor at all. This is better than cotton for me. The rayon is pure also.

Starting @ Post 45 . Pictured is the actual material from a carto coil. And many more posts of the viva and how I wrap it .

WHOOT! First coil I built, and a Nano at that...and it WORKS! 30ga Kanthal wrapped on a 1/16 bit, Q-tip cotton, don't remember the number of wraps I used, measures out at 2.5 ohms, but HOT DAMN it works. Vaping at 7 watts on a k101, great throat hit, great vapor..can't wait to see what happens once I actually know what I'm doing LMAO.

I use Viva towels as a cap reducer in my RSST. Wet it down with a little juice. Sculp it. No bad flavors, stays in place, and does wonders to liven up the vape.
