I had a realtor over today because we are thinking about moving to a smaller house. As we were in the bar area, he noticed my pack and asked what it was and I told him the whole SHTF plan. He was looking at the pack and tried to move it and commented that it was heavy. I told him I had it over packed just in case and we started talking about how much time a person would have to prepare once we heard things were bad.
I told him that where we live, planning for a rural bug out situation, I felt we had more time once we heard SHTF and we didnt have to move as quickly. He lives in Chattanooga and is more in the urban area and asked if I thought it would be good for his use. I said the idea is the same, but I would definitely change some of the items I carried.
Heres whats I came up with so far:
1. Replace the survival shovel with a crowbar- You will need to break into buildings more than you will need to dig a hole.
2. Remove the tent and sleeping bags- the majority of the bulk and weight come from the tent/sleeping bags. Finding a place to stay will be much easier in an urban area vs the woods.
3. Get a smaller pack- obviously less to carry means a smaller pack to hold it.
4. Eliminate the mess kit and just use the canteen stove. The stove is plenty to cook with and to eventually boil water. The extra weight of the mess kit is not needed as you can find plenty of abandoned houses with plenty of cookware.
5. Change your main weapons over to handguns- easier to conceal. If you want an assault weapon, look at possibly getting a Keltec PLR-16
Kel Tec CNC I believe it uses the same magazines as a full size AR15, but being smaller, its easier to conceal. Forget the 22, as you will be defending yourself and your stuff from a lot of people. The 22 is great for a survival gun in the woods, not so much when you need stopping power against lots of people.
6. Food will become your most sought after commodity. Have extra room in your pack to load it down if you come across a good supply.
Your pack should be smaller and lighter. The items you carry should be well thought out. City folk wont have the luxury of extra time to be able to carry lots of extras.
