It came in at 1.78 ohms. I was shooting for 1.8 so I was ecstatic. Went the super simple route just a basic coil using a needle and 2mm ekowool but it worked first try. Was excited about that too.

The only thing is I think I might have wrapped the coil too tight. It's not saturating as quickly as my stock ones, but that's just a mental note for later.

I used 2mm ekowool, 30g kanthal, and 6 wraps... This was a Kanger head rebuild btw.

Anyway pretty amazing how clean a brand new wick is.

Even more amazing how simple and quick it is to build a coil.

Next time I want to try a microcoil...

Is it even possible to make a microcoil with ekowool / silica? I'm thinking it would be a pain right in the rump trying to thread that through a micro but maybe one of you knows a trick or two.

Anyway congrats to myself lol! I'm patting myself on the back!

:2cool:

congratulations to both of you, i remember when i rebuilt my first coil in a kanger... believe it or not but this is usually more difficult than most rebuildables out there...

i also find silica very difficult to build coils on, personally, my wife still prefers silica and i prefer cotton, so much simpler... take a drill bit for whatever size you desire, wrap on drill bit, make it nice and tight... then gently thread the cotton through... bam, done, nice excellent coil... just dont ever dry burn a coil with the cotton in it... oh and if the cotton gets burnt or gunky, you can just pull the cotton and replace it... no need to make a new coil... check out the bsd vertical chimney coil for kanger heads, its here on this... best performance i ever got from my protank, hands down

Just pull the cotton out and replace it, eh? Coolness! That's good to know if there's tons of gunk!!

Congrats to both of you! It's a really good feeling and super easy once you get it down. I've done mine too snuggly, too. I set those aside separately for a future rebuild if they start tasting burnt too quickly. Trial and error... trial and error. (many errors  )

I've done only a couple micro coils in the past. I haven't been a big fan of cotton and couldn't get the silica to thread easily either. I started to give up on those. I was using a 5/64 drill bit. I got a 4-40 machine screw last week and tried once again last night. It wrapped evenly (more easily), still too snug for my silica. I did use sugar and cream yarn but removed ONE strand (of the 4) from the piece. It's wicking very well. I'm still not a huge fan of cotton, though. Regardless, I felt good accomplishing this. It came in at 2.2, I think 6 wraps? I forgot to count, lol, could be 7.

Building any wick is a really satisfying feeling! When it vapes well, even more so.

Yay!

I boiled it once, though most do say twice. Some don't boil at all and are fine with it. It tasted better with less yarn this time. It could be that I was simply using too much. Way too much.

it requires some adjustment to get it right for you... it varies for everyone... just make sure you dont burn it... burnt cotton... man... i havent burnt any cotton aside from when i was using my aga t2... but that was terrible... i mean... bleh

Congrats on your first rebuild! :toast:

As to using silica in a micro, yes it can be done. Ekowool, probably not but regular silica should be easy. I use cotton cooking twine and a bead threading needle (Hobby Lobby) to pull 3 (doubled over to 6) of the 8 strands into the coil. (This is a 1/16 micro for a Kanger.) A few more strands on top for flavor wicks and I'm good to go. You could do the same thing with silica.

Welcome to the club. THe first one I rebuilt was using 32 gauge and cotton on a mini protank 2. Looked ugly but worked pretty well. Then I got into doing RDAs and I haven't looked back. I still am mostly using single coils but one of my duals works fantastic so I will do another like it. I have 2 that I can build duals on and 3 that are for singles only. Wait until you do a quality nano build or something of that nature. It is just so satisfying. My next experiment will be a dual diamond formation just to see if I can do it. Have fun.

I just recently rebuilding my own protank coil head. Very satisfied and cheap.
I'm thinking maybe dripping or mech tank that deliver better flavors, what would you guys suggest?
I'm using svd, currently have no funds to move up to mech mod and I don't really know much about it. Also I'm afraid I might be able to screw it up on the mech mod so... I still need more practice lol

So a little update.

I mentioned that the build was drawing weird, and I was looking at the thread about flavor wicks this morning in which many were saying they aren't necessarily needed, so I pulled out the couple silica strands I put on top of the coil, and what do you know it's hitting like a freakin' champ now!

Yep I just over-wicked! Build was actually fine. I think it's hitting better than my stocks now.

Did I mention?

It's hitting like a champ!

MBV Banana Nut Bread never tasted so good.

Smiling through a huge cloud!

Can't wait to get my first RDA... hopefully tomorrow!

very nice congrats, what i did with my silica was order 3mm instead of 2, (if you decide to stick with silica for rebuilding i would suggest getting 3mm) flavor wicks are not really necessary the reason that you are getting better performance is because iirc you said you were using 2mm, the kanger coils have approx 3mm ish openings with the top on... if you use 3mm it will fit perfectly and you wont need flavor wicks... or you could just use cotton... cotton blows silica out of the water...
