There was a story on the radio yesterday morning about e-cigarettes becoming a medicine in 2016 (in the uk), that was all I heard on the news as I was changing channels so can't say anymore about it but it did get me thinking. I expect that in 5 years time it is quite possible to see a lockdown on purchasing nic (IMO just so they can heavily tax it to replace the cigarette tax they are losing) so maybe getting some stocks in now would be a good idea.

I've seen a lot of posts on cheapest nic, bulk buying etc but has anyone yet brought in bulk for long term storage?

Is there anything to look at if I am considering buying/storing this for the long term (I'm talking 5+ years or maybe more), I was thinking that one of those mini fridge/ beer style office coolers you see might make a good storage place.

Does it matter if it is is PG or VG based, or which one would be best for long term storage.

Does it even make sense.

I recently saw 5 liters of 72mg for £275 and thought this might be a good start. I'm guessing 5 liters would last a long time but if I was to buy a couple of these I would suspect they would see me out :D

If you were to do this, how would you go about it, and what would you purchase.

I think Nic only lasts a couple of years if frozen, I maybe wrong and i'm sure someone more knowledgeable will correct me if I am, but I would hold fire on getting a huge amount in for now, even if they do tax the crap out of it or ban it you will still be able to get it from China, which is what I plan on doing in a shtf scenario.

Hello
I know this is not what your looking for but just got to add it.
If there is a disaster that ends things as we know it then you will be a lot more focused on living then vaping .
To wean your self off of nicotine , without the pain keel a months worth of juice at the nicotine level your using now and some VG and every week add VG=too what you have left this will stretch your juice and get you off the nicotine .

Correction Nicotine mixed with PG or VG only lasts a few years.

He's not talking about doomsday but regulations and taxes which will make it very hard to get nicotine. Its impractical to stock up on 10% nicotine, you will save money for a few years. There are better options. But only if you are a trained chemist or chemical lab tech.

I suspect that nic properly stored will remain good with only minor degrading occurring to the nic potency over time. Some on this forum have already used stored nic that was 4 or more years old. I have about 8 years worth in storage now and may add more once the FDA makes their final decision. Nic in small airtight glass bottles stored in a freezer will store very well.

I've got about a liter and a half of this in my freezer

Nude Armor Nicotine Base - EXTENDED SHELF LIFE - Nude Nicotine

The issue with long term storage is that oxygen and light will oxidize the nicotine. It's not so much that it goes bad but it starts to lose strength over time. The Nude Armor is shipped in Amber bottles and the air in the bottle is replaced with argon gas to slow down the oxidation. They say the shelf life in a freezer is around 2 years, I think it is probably higher than that.

Here's a couple of threads on long term storage

From my study, it seems that PG is a better base for long term storage, VG is likely to degrade faster due to holding more oxygen in solution.

Hope this helps.

You are correct in that the idea is more about protecting a supply rather than a doomsday event :D

The problem is, as described above, how to maintain it and how long it would last. If tomorrow they regulated and taxed nic liquid to the same level as tobacco here in the uk I would be pretty ...... off I hadn't brought a couple of liters now.

Why am I worried you may ask ... well I just can't believe the government here wont have to do something to get some money back, given the number of people switching to ecigs.

Some quotes from the TMA website to show the kind of figures persuading the government.

The tax, both excise duty and VAT, raised through the sale of tobacco products continues to be a major source of revenue for the Government, contributing around £12.3 billion annually.

On a typical pack of 20 premium cigarettes the total tax burden of £6.17 accounts for 77% of the recommended retail price (RRP) of £7.98. On some of the least expensive brands the total tax burden accounts for up to 88% of the RRP.

in March 2013 the price of a typical pack of premium cigarettes in the UK was £7.98 while in Belgium the price was about £4.00, in Spain it was around £3.80 and Poland it was around £2.65.

Given these figures I could see that the government may be considering ways to try and get back some of the lost 12.3 billion from taxing/controlling the nicotine bases. Hence the idea to stock up while the going is good ... if possible/feasible.

I'm off to read those links posted above to get more info (thanks for those).

BTW. Still interested in your thoughts on this.
