Burned my carto

Yesterday I refilled a carto for the second time.
Used a bit too much liquid.

I had to let it rest for a while and, blew out the excess fluid, and let it rest again.

After an hour or two I decided to give it a try.
juice kept coming out. Blew it out again, let it rest again.

I had to repeat this several times, as every time I let it rest, juice began dripping out after a while.
I couldn't have flooded it so badly...

Today there were no more leakages, so I began vaping...
After a few drags a had a severe burnt taste in my mouth.

Tried again, and perfect taste, a few drags later almost no vapour and and a distinct burnt taste.
I decided to toss the carto, but out of curiosity i pulled out the filler.

Still wet, but with a distinct burnt hole in the lower part of the filler.

How can a full wet carto burn?
Was it caused by a flaw in the carto itself?
Or was it caused by the flooding?

Just wasted about 1ml of my favourite juice :(

I've noticed a 'burnt plastic' taste to the vapor with prefilled cartos (just getting started with filling my own) when I draw too hard or too long. Am I actually burning the filler?

1) Is this likely to be bad for me? It certainly tastes bad, and I would guess that inhaling burnt plastic would not be advisable.

2)Is there any warning sign that I am getting close to burning the filler? I have noticed at times that the cartomizer is getting hot enough to be very uncomfortable on my lips. Not hot enough to blister, but really uncomfortable. I have been vaping only two weeks now, and I have severely underordered, both in quantity and nicotine content, so I have tended to really try to wring every last bit of content from each cartomizer.

It could be the type of carto you are using. I have one that is a carto with the wire vertical in the filling and those darn cartos get so hot I was thinking of getting a drip tip to save my lips. Then I have cartos that have the dual bottom horizontal coil and they do not get hot like other others.

I have burned cartos and they taste really bad, I keep everything well juiced now and have not had a problem. I suggest getting e liquid if you haven't already to add some juice to your cartos, you get alot more mileage out of them. I am now adding a couple drops everytime after I vape one. That way they do not dry out or get burnt. Plus when I go to use that carto again it is ready to go. bnrk

v4l cartos. I think I may work them too hard. On a pass-thru, a carto only lasts about 30 minutes before beginning to smell like burnt plastic. I've been trying to keep 2 or 3 cartos working at the same time to give them time to cool down a bit between drags. This seems to work a bit better. Looks kind of funny with this 'bouquet' of batteries sticking out between my fingers and taking drags off them in rotation. At least the cartos last a couple of hours that way.

What is the PG/VG of your juice? Do you have thin enough juice? I use 20% VG or less. The thicker your juice is the more chance it won't flow fast enough to keep the coil area damp.

And what kind of carto - if you are trying to learn on LR cartos or complex cartos I recommend simple standard resistance cartos (and not by SLB - they suck - inside they have a silicone seal and a loose unorganized wad of stuffing w/ no defined air channel and are only good for one fill IMO).

Also how did you fill? I do not use methods like pushing in in with a condom. Some types of cartos have inner seals and don't fill right that way and I like to see how it is filled.

I fill and top off like this I can get 7-10 days use out of a carto. I have over 14 days use on my current Boge carto (that is 5 weeks for me because I use the Boge 1/2 the time and vape a KR8 1/2 the time - I carry 510, Riva and KR8 with me). I never run a carto dry. I keep them damp. And I avoid juices that drop a lot of sediment in the stuffing (clogs carto, shortens its life)

---
How I fill Vapor4Life KR8 cartos and Boge 510 cartos

With the carto off the battery... Pop out the soft cap with an unbent paperclip in the mouth hole, very careful not to catch stuffing or the wire loop.
Shake and open the eliquid

Fill
Hold a bit of tissue on the threaded end hole, tilt the carto, and add 18 drops per ml of capacity into the stuffing (Boges and most KR8 cartos are about 1ml).
Wait 15 seconds or so then see how many more drops the carto stuffing will soak in easily.

Cleanup
Clean up the threaded end, tilt open end down into tissue, puff into threaded end to clear air channel (Boges and the KR8 cartos I use have a defined center air channel and I want to see light through that) While the carto is still open end down, touch a soft bunch of tissue to the top of the stuffing to get the loose juice - this will help prevent leaks.

Settle (first fill only)
Cap and let it settle - I lay it on different sides for 15-20 minutes to make sure every bit of stuffing gets damp so I won't singe the carto. if you use thicker juice than me (I use 20% Vg or less) then you may need to wait much longer.

While vaping
While vaping, if the vapor gets a bit light or a bit dry or the carto is getting hotter than normal, I take the carto off the battery and add eliquid. Also, I use such light sediment-free juices, I can look at the stuffing and see if it needs juice because the stuffing goes back to near-white.

I often use a plastic or delrin drip tip as a mouthpiece on Boge and KR8 cartos (not to drip into since the juice would head for the central air channel). Easy to pop out to add juice.

Adding juice for the first time to a blank carto with the condom refill method works great and is the best way to fill a cart.
However i found that the second time you refill the cart it's best to drip along the sides to prevent over saturation. This may help to prevent the leakage. Also blowing into a carto you can actually blow almost all the liquid out on accident. I did this once and 3 puffs later i got that burt taste a ruined the cart. Hope this helped.

I use the prefilled apollo standard carto's,
as they aren't standard types, I don't know how the atomizer is fitted in the carto.

I vape them till the top starts getting white,
then I add pg juice from the standard liberty flights range (which feels much better to me than the standard fill).

I fill them by leaving the condom on on the threaded side and dripping along the edge until a litle juice pools on the top.
I then proceed by letting the carto rest for about 20 minutes.
Then I remove the condom, wipe clean the threads and blow through the threaded side into a paper towel.
Finally i clean up any remaining fluid that's not absorbed by slightly touching the filler with te paper towel.

I let it rest for another five to ten minutes,
and then they're vape-ready...

The one that burned just kept loosing fluid, while I didn't even drip in a lot (a 8 to 10 drops).

So far it's just been pre-filled v4l cartos, plus v4l blanks filled with v4l WOW Nobacco juice.

I fill by removing the cap, dripping from the bottle into the edge of a tilted carto. 20 drops, rotating the carto about a quarter turn after each drop. I haven't blown them out, but so far I haven't had any leaks, either into the battery or into my mouth. However, 3 refills is the max on any carto so far. (I'm pretty new, so it's just that I haven't recycled a carto that often.) I haven't even tried refilling a used pre-filled carto yet. I've been (horrors!) throwing them away.

Thanks for all the advice.

What happens to the carto that makes you throw them away after 3 uses?

I used to throw pre-filled cartos away after ONE use. I didn't know they were re-useable. Since I have got a supply of one juice (5 bottles, by accident - I thought I had selected boxes of pre-filled with that flavor), I have been refilling, but only for three cycles so far. I haven't thrown any away (of flavors I like) since I started refilling.

I don't know whether I have ruined any cartos yet. They seem to taste all right once they have been refilled, even if I drew too hard (or whatever I did wrong) and got that burnt plastic taste from them. What I'm really trying to find out is what I am doing wrong to get that burnt plastic taste. I suspect it is either drawing too hard, or continuing to try to use them when they are too close to empty.

To keep from burning my lips, I usually hold a bundle of three battery/cartomizers in my hand and draw from them alternately. That way any one of them never gets too hot.

You'll get the hang of it. I still vape til I burn it once in a while. On some cartos, if you don't burn them too badly, you can rinse them out and they're good as new.
On the burning lips thing- if you get DRIP-TIPS- they attach to the top(mouth piece extensions), they'll help. should be some on the website.

I have found this too, a hard long drag seems to burn then PDQ, so I really try to keep everything wet and use slow easy drags, I can keep a carto functioning longer that way. I always add a few drops to prefilled ones just to be safe so incase they are a bit dry they won't burn. If the carto gets that hot, stop vaping on it and let it cool.I keep many cartos well juiced so I keep them form getting hot, take about 5 drags and stop, put on another if I want to vape more. I always add a drop or two after I finish vaping as well. Even if a few drops of liquid gets into the bottom of the carto cap/condom, I just clean it off really well for next vape. I also add those drops back into the carto after I vape on it. This has really saved my cartos and makes them last. bnrk

The one that burned just kept loosing fluid, while I didn't even drip in a lot (a 8 to 10 drops).

The carto developed a hole in the airhole tube probably was burned through by the coil. I've encountered some that have done it and took them apart to see what was going on. Sure enough, found a hole.

The down side to Drip-Tips is that I would think they might mask the heat warning. I'm trying to figure a way to avoid the carto getting so hot as to begin burning the filler.

I usually just lay a finger on the carto . Between that and the warmth of the vapor, you'll be okay. Of course, slow easy drags and avoid fast chain vapeing.
Oh, and keep the filler wet!!!
