you could be right - i believe the event has been at the clarion in the past and this year maybe that time slot was taken? richmond is pretty busy with conventions all year round. i don't think it's a sports event. nascar is the only big game in town .........
i have not gone - i hate that ride to richmond. almost 3 hours of nothing ........
i much rather head toward raleigh/durham but lynchburg is very doable ;)

Yeah! I'd love to meet up with you sometime, girl! I think we could have a lot of fun vaping together, especially since you said awhile ago that you do the EVOD now.
I have seen a few other folks around here in the Fort Worth area vaping. One even had an EVOD. Everyone else has an eGo or just regular 510 e-ciggies.. I don't know of any clubs in Ft Worth though. There are probably some, but I just haven't found them yet.

The doc said he was going to kick my .... for the first two weeks of treatment and he did. His foot was a bit too heavy though, and I wound up in the hospital last Friday. Got home last night and doing fair today. We'll start again next week and he promises things will be easier. I won't believe that until he proves it, heheh.

I'm still trying to stay busy with cartomizer design and builds. However, I may not be able to do it for long. My eyesight is failing rapidly and it is becoming very difficult to machine the smaller parts. I don't know how bad I'll feel later on and right now I am trying to build an update that can be used just in case my favorite one fails. I have earlier builds that may get by in a pinch, but I hate the thought of having to use them.

But then, the new design will get its air from the top instead of through the bottom and it may be a failure. Hopefully it will get finished and I'll find out.

sure hope the next round will be easier on you, (((br)))!

is there any way you can work with a magnifying glass while machining?

Thanks hon. I will call it quits if the next rounds are not easier.

I am already working under large magnification lamps, lighted headband magnifying lenses, jeweler's loops, etc. Don't know what else to try.

It has been a long time since I have used Carts but got these Smok shorties that were recommended in a co-op and I wanted to see if they had gotten better. No way. I soaked a few in my juice for half an hour and set them on three new twist batteries at 3.2v and 2ohm. The first after 4 min of vaping started giving the dreaded poly burn flavor. the second started giving me some poly flavor at 30 minutes and the third at 10. I topped each after every 5 draws and one was in a tank, they were always very wet. In my tests a few years ago I took apart over a hundred used carts that were sent to me by other vapors and many of those pics are on another thread. Here are some pics of a shorty after ten minutes of use.

The sleeve off. Still very wet.

Starting to unwrap the poly with a visible hole and melting.

Further unwrapping shows larger hole and melting.

Coil in great shape.

Diaper and filler burnt thru.

The diaper material seems different on these then the ones I used to take apart. They used to be just plain 100% cotton cloth like from a handkerchief. In my 70 years I have probably only had 5 or 6 headaches, but vaping these poly fumes started giving me one, so I quit.
Needless to say I will not be vaping carts, they are no better or maybe worse than a few years ago. Have no idea what the diaper material is now.

BJ43 I really wouldn't vape anything with diaper-and-wadding. You see plenty of those old style cartos for sale in the convenience stores here - all disposable e-cigs have them, etc. I doubt anything much has changed in the shorties you just vaped and the original diaper-and-wadding cartos from a few years back.
Just my opinion, though.

Hang in there, hon!

Don't you have like a two-lifetime supply of homemade cartomizers by now? ;)

Hello, BJ! Since you're obviously not a newbie, I'll spare you the lecture about filling cartos properly... ;)

That's very worrisome, indeed. I thought that quality of cartomizers has been actually improving, but this is clearly not the case with those Smoktech shorties. I'm really surprised. I have used Smoktech cartos in the past and had zero problems with burning. I even used those huge 4 ml cartomizers and they worked beautifully--I just hated the size. I prefer 1 ml-1.5 ml size. And you're correct, the diapers used to be made out of cotton; like I said earlier, they were even tested in an independent lab by one of our contributors.

I still use Boge cartos in my carto tanks without issues. But I do prefer clearomizers, especially Kanger BCC, because they are so easy to use and maintain.

Thanks for the great pictures! I wonder if you just got a bad batch or is this a "new and improved" design.

Well Tweetie Pie, I have all kinds of old stuff laying around here somewhere in boxes or whatnot. I even have a few unused original cartomizers from when I first discovered vaping. But that doesn't mean that I will be happy to fall back on the use any one of them if my physical condition deteriorates to a point where I have to depend on them. My latest prototype suits me better than anything that came before it, and it's kind of hard to go back to anything in this old world when you've had the very best.

Yes Katya, I have been at this a long time, and I do not know what contributor you refer to, but I had a forensic lab test the diapers years ago and posted the results. I know keeping it wet helps, but these things seem to be hand wrapped, at least the diapers, and if that diaper is just a little off you get a hot spot, resulting in burn and melt. Seems kind of risky to have something harmful like poly so close to a hot coil and depend on keeping it wet. If the FDA ever gets around to testing I doubt any cartos will pass.

If you look down into a wet cart as you fire it and see a red coil(<1000F), you got a bad one and just burnt some diaper and poly. The diaper was not well wrapped around the coil and there was air between the diaper and the coil that caused a hot spot and burn.

This problem with carts and the poly in regular attys was why I finally came up with the "Bonut".:)

On this particular carto the problem was on the top edge of the first wrap of the diaper, seems there was a small fold that separated the diaper from the silica sleeve/straw. It was wet but the coil was not at that spot.

BJ, I don't know how you are testing your cart, but if you look down in it as it fires, you should never ever see a red coil. Bad one or not. A red coil is a dry coil and anything near it that can burn or melt will do just that. I do not believe it is possible for a wet coil to approach this temperature. That is, not in a complete properly loaded out of the box PV. I do know as fact that some of us on this thread either have or have been using these types for a few years without a trace of an actual burn. But then, I see red in mine every week or so, heheh. That's when dry burning a coil in a filler-less cartomizer to remove a crud buildup.

I can't see your avatar well enough to know for certain, but it appears to be a Little Bird. I used to have a few of them and competed in Concours d'Elegance on local, region, state, nation and international levels. Those were some of the best years of my life.

Yep, 55 bird, bought it in HS from a cousin in 1959 and still have it. My point on the red coil was that if the diaper was not wrapped correctly, the coil will be dry and as you state, a dry coil will get red.

I really thought about never posting here again as cart users can get very defensive so I will give my opinion and bow out. When I was young I would drive my Tbird at over 100mph, top down, no seat belts, I smoked 2 packs a day for over 50 years, now that I have been vaping for many years and over 70 in excellent health, why would I use a gadget that has the potential to heat up over 1000f in a split second with a material 3mm away that produces fumes as bad or worse than tobacco. So many other choices out there more efficient and better flavor without poly. Just seems like Russian roulette to me. But to each his own.:toast:
