Please see this article about how to fix the bad taste of new atomizers:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/133998-how-fix-bad-taste-new-atomizers.html

Whether or not they come with primer in - some do and some don't - they universally taste bad at first, due to manufacturing residues, coatings, and adhesives. These have to be removed by rinsing out and burning off.

Atomizers should be tested on receipt because one in ten are likely to be dud. To store them, they can be dried out and then sealed in a ziplock bag or similar. This probably isn't critical as the active parts are made from nichrome, nickel chromium, and are all but inert (immune to corrosion) in most environments. It would be best to ensure there is no water or any liquid that might have water content in them, though.
