I would flip out if either of my children even looked like they wanted to smoke a cigarette. Completely lose it on so many levels. It's one of the two subjects that I'm completely inflexible on as a parent (the other being that college or trade school is non-negotiable, I don't care if it's medical school or HVAC repair or anything in between, but they are both going.) Unfortunately my step sister and her ex husband have not been so diligent with their daughters and the older one (already an adult) smokes like a little chimney. I want to get her set up vaping but I also want to get her set up in such a way that she'll actually do it and like it and keep with it.

I know my niece though; if it's not attractive or cool looking she's not going to use it, if it's not easy to use she's not going to use it, and if it's not satisfying she's not going to use it. On a practical side-- I'm going to be paying for it so any extra attys and batteries, etc. need to be easy on the wallet and easy to purchase at a B&M. Not exactly thrilled about the idea but considering buying my step sister a PV starter set, more to keep her hands off of anything I send my niece than out of concern for her health.

Is she local to you, by any chance? Juices can taste totally different to different people and tastes there are super subjective. On top of that, it sounds like she's really going to care about the looks of it, which is another individual tastes thing. Any chance you can take her to a B&M and shop with her to help her find something that fits the bill?

No we're not local but she does live with my mom and my mom (who has never smoked) would take her to a vape shop in my stead if that's the best route, but I don't want to send them in directionless or without a decent budget. I was sort of planning on looking for something local to me and mailing it to her or ordering for a starter kit online and having them send it to her and then directing her to vape shops local to her to keep her stocked since I'm sure I could find one or two that would sell me gift certificates to give her.

You could also pull together a few different options for starter kits that you think will appeal to her online, send over the links, and let her pick the one she thinks looks the best. Mail her a couple little bottles of juice you like to get her started and a gift cert to a local B&M so she can try out juice when her gear comes in and buy some she likes.

I'd show her an EMOW kit in a pretty color, a nice looking MVP kit, maybe an iStick, and some ego twists. That should be a few different looks to choose from that will give her a decent vape.

As a parent of a 21 year old and someone who's job leads them to deal with a lot of young people, I can tell you that you have some major disappointments ahead of you if you are setting these sort of absolutes.

That being said, I would say a VV4 setup with a Nautilus mini would work nicely. It's not as nice or as cool as a pack of Marlboro red's, but it's about as easy and cheap as you can get. It's up to her (not you) whether she will use it or not.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm just trying to lead a horse to water, if it drinks-- yay!

I hope I don't dissuade you, but I just mean that these sort of decisions in others lives start in infancy, not in adolescence. It's a lot harder after. I truly hope you are able to turn your niece away from smoking and towards vaping or even better...neither. That being said, I stand by my recommendation. Beyond that I would stay constant in her life, both in vaping and otherwise. Maybe vaping can be that conduit to keep you two together.

Over the years I have helped many people that I know try to move on to PV's, The more I helped the more dependent they became on me to get them different liquids. The problem was that different people have different tastes. Once the brick and mortars started to pop up all over I started to move them to local shops and then links to different vendors along with the link to EFC. It became to much and like a bird you have to learn to fly. I learned by trying different vendors and found the ones I liked with the help of the people of this forum. They have helped me buy different tanks, carto's Mods ect. The people on this forum have been extremely helpful to me over the years and I appreciate all. So help as much as you can but get them to learn to use this forum. That is the best help that you can give them. I hope that this does not come over as mean and callus because it was not intended to be.

I think the consensus is that the Nautilus mini and istick mini make one heck of a dummy proof starter kit. I would be concerned about flavor too, make sure to give her a few bottles to sample.

I think a trip to the B&M is essential. I would also make sure to let her parents know to send you the starter kit in the mail if it just ends up in a drawer. I have given out over 60 complete vape set ups over the last 2 years. I would say 20 of them were given out multiple times. I dont care if you decide to quit vaping, but I would care if a perfectly good set up went to waste.

Although this forum is great, it's still a traditional internet forum and in so is frequented by an older crowd. I would certainly not dissuade her from frequenting and using the wisdom of this community. However, she might find the confines of the Reddit subgroup http://www.reddit.com/r/electronic_cigarette/ a bit more her "style". I would recommend both.

I understand what you're saying and I do agree. I take it for granted that with my kids it's been very easy because I've always been open and completely honest (maybe too much so) that I feel that choosing to smoke and not being more forceful in pursuing my own education have been THE two things that have held me back most in life and limited my options, so it's not like I just put my foot down without discussion.

With my nieces, the communication dynamic is totally different, so I just try to give subtle nudges without coming down on them. Even though I ultimately hope to enable her to get off the cigarettes I don't want her to think too deeply about that aspect. I would be absolutely over the moon if she could give up smoking and then give up vaping.

Well, good for you Wendy for trying to be a positive influence in the lives of your family and others. I hope you didn't see my post as condemnation. It wasn't intended that way, only advice and recommendation. I think what you are doing is great.

My son is 20 and is in the Navy and smokes and vapes. I am sad that he does so because I am sure part of it is him seeing me smoking all his life. I spent all his life telling him of the evils of smoking that I couldn't quit, and he did it anyway. That's on me. I made it a normal part of his life.

Hopefully, you can make vaping a normal part of her life and get her away from the smokes and into what we all hope is a more healthy lifestyle.
