What's wrong with theses so called studies and articles being written is that all seem to feature the cig a like devices which in my opinion are not good enough to help most people kick the habit. I tried two different types before I got an ego kit which on that very day I quit and never looked back. I was a close to 2 packs a day then. Here's an example of an article I'm talking about. More people are smoking e-cigarettes, but as a quitting tool, they may be all smoke and mirrors - NY Daily News

There are many facets of the E-cigarette movement.
Various different types of PV and e-liquids.
There is no such thing as a 1 Size Fits All thing with smokers.
Some are very content with their cig-a-like ... while others need more.

The problem with studies just using the cig-a-like, limited flavors, and limited nic levels ...
We are often dealing with researchers who never smoked and have absolutely no clue
what e-smoking is really all about and do NOT realize ....
You can't dissect and put the e-smoking phenomenon
in a test tube, with all its variables, and break out percentages.

Wanna see a Real Study that will be productive ??
Give me 50 smokers who are motivated to quit ...
and tell them to meet me at a E-cigarette store who stocks
various kinds of PVs and lots of flavors with nic levels ranging
from 0 to 36mg ... I'll work with each of them and let them try out
everything ... Then I'll tell them ... If you are having any issues ...
Go back to the store and try out a different PV ... flavor ...
and or nic level.

Just like everyone else here has done ... in order to find out
what works best for us.

All the past e-cigarette studies are basically flawed (period)

Water quenches thirst ... No need to try and prove it.
Millions of smokers have switched to e-smoking ...
Just accept the obvious ... e-cigarettes help people stop smoking.

Petrodus, I love this post! Though, A love button is not an option here. This is so true. With the help of an experienced vaper, I too guarantee the quit rates would be through the roof. Even the "experts" recommend a support group when quitting! Vapers would be an excellent support group. We do it HERE every day! And the ONLY side effect of a turned vaper via ECF would be "warning your political views may tend to change while getting advice from the forum" Ha...had to throw that in there!!

I sent Dr. Polosa a link to this thread, and directed him to Response #4.

Here is his response:

Currently it is clear that there is no science to guide a smoker of a certain brand into an ecig with a certain aroma and nic level.

I agree that there is no such thing as a 1 Size Fits All thing with smokers and that is exactly why there are so many brands of tobacco cigarette out there. The same applies to ecigs/eliquids. Hence, I am aware of the complexity of the e-smoking phenomenon, but I still wish to dissect it out and to find predictors for certain ecig/eliquid success adoption rate (please note, I am not using the word "quit rate").

An interesting information came up recently from our ECLAT dataset.
Those who were smoking the highest TAR tobacco cigarettes were more unlikely to adopt ecigs (and quit). Nicotine per se seems to have little or no role. Taste matters.

Initially ... Nicotine levels DOES play a significant role...
Taste is absolutely an important variable also.

Maybe someday a researcher will come along
who is a former smoker who switched to vaping ...
If and when that day comes ... There will be a lot less
head scratching and wondering about the obvious
and how to logically approach obtaining statistics.
