If a lighter actually burned the wick, I would be going with a different make of atty. They are not supposed to burn...if I am understanding what you said here. The wicks are supposed to be a heat-resistant glass fiber. Here is a thread that discusses what to use and where to get it:

How you would mount a wick in an atty already manufactured, I don't know.

I personally, however, would not take apart an atty to clean it. I soak mine for 12 hours in a polydent solution, then just flush with hot water, and let dry. This gets all the gunk out well without damaging the internals of the atty. It does tend to take any paint off them after a few washings, though.
