it definitely depends on the flavor and the quality of the juice, i think.
my first 5 bottles of 30 ml liquid were super cheap, and kinda crappy in comparison to the liquid i'm buying now. when i was vaping with the cheaper stuff, curious bystanders asked me to blow vapor into their face so they could find out if it emitted a smell along with vapor (silly hippies). the flavors they could smell were strawberry banana, pineapple, and chocolate. the lilac and double mint didn't really smell like anything to anyone. vaping outside of a bar, most of the drunk smokers would usually make a comment about the chocolate vapor, how it smelled tasty, and asked to try.
now that i smoke a better quality liquid it's easier for those standing in the way of my vapor to guess at a flavor. most often i just hear that it just smells sweet, and a smell is only really detected if they're in the way of my vapor (either intentionally or by accident). but the smell isn't overall lingering like cigarette smoke, and i've been able to vape in the break room at work while i'm alone without anyone noticing. i've had people walk in on me while i'm using it, but we've both just pretended i wasn't vaping in the break room. i'm totally not allowed to vape indoors, it's kind of an unspoken rule. my store manager doesn't see vaping as any different than smoking, and i work in an organic grocery store. my coworkers are pretty mindful of potential toxins, and i know that i would be stepping on toes by helping myself to a vape in a common area. however, they realize there isn't any smoke so if i'm not vaping inside all the time even if by myself and they catch me vaping they just won't say anything. also, if it does get ridiculously cold out here (we've seen a couple of -30 days, but not as many as we "should" for this time of year), i've tipped them off i may vape in the bathroom and they've given me the go ahead at my own risk should any higher ups figure out what i'm doing. but i don't think any lingering odors will be the thing that breaks me there. every once in a while at home i detect lingering odors if i'm producing a lot of vapor, but i use mostly fruity flavors so it could potentially be perceived as something other than my vapor production.
