Hey all, I just spoke with a neighbor of mine who has tried vaping on and off but had to finally give it up because of canker sores, or mouth ulcers. It sounds like he gave it a serious try and liked it except for this side effect that never let up over the course of a year or so.

I walked him through everything I could think of- he tried 100% VG flavors and a variety of different levels and juices. It was also just mouth to lunging, so I don't think it was a quantity issue. He did say the higher VG wasn't as bad....I'm thinking maybe it wasn't a true PG free juice. But aside from a PG sensitivity, I can't think of what else could cause this.

Has anyone experienced this, or know of something else that I could maybe have him try? He's back to smoking, and seems like he really does want to quit.

I'm NOT a medical professional, but it seems that his issue with canker sores MAY have been vape related.

Others on the forum have reported the same, and a quick Google search for "canker sores and vaping" will lead you to a ton of stories here, on Reddit, and elsewhere on the interwebs.

Now the really interesting part is that they may have been caused by quitting smoking, not necessarily vaping:

A list of symptoms when quitting tobacco and changing to an ecigarette

Things to try would be staying well hydrated, rinsing the mouth with salt water, and all the other canker sore fixes out there.

Also, there are some max/all VG e-liquids out there that might be worth a try. I wish I had a simple fix, but everyone's different. I wish your friend the best of luck quitting!

Oh very interesting. He actually mentioned something about this is passing; that it may have been due to the cig quitting. I've never heard that until now. Hmm, sounds like he really did his homework. Good stuff thanks!

Like k-tech mentioned it could even be a side effect of quitting smoking. I also know that nicotine overdoses can cause stomach ulcers and acid reflux. Do you know what strength he was using?

Rinsing your mouth out before you go to bed can get any glycol or nicotine residue out before you go to sleep. Wouldn't give it a chance to cause irritation to his gums or cheeks.

Agreed

I used to get them alot when I first started vaping, assumed it was due to quiting, but found it readily went away to more hydrated I found to keep myself.
I still get them on odd morning durring the winters but go away with adequate hydration.

Odd... I recently have been getting canker sores, and didn't relate it to vaping. I have been vaping for over 2 years, and vape primarily a VG based liquid for over a year, but the cankers have just recently been appearing in the last month. I quit about 2 years ago as well. The cankers just recently started.

I have only been vaping maybe 2 months now and I experienced the same kinda issue..pretty painful stuff, even thought about the cigs again, but not gonna do it..

I'm sure there is all kinds of scientific data out there about it, like mouth rinses..etc.., but mine seem to be better lately. I lower my nic to 12mg and been using vanilla cream 60/40 vg/pg (which was soothing) so I stuck with it.

I was trying to find a juice/juices that I liked..and believe my problem was from different flavorings and type of bases used (nic/vg/pg) from different vendors.. Certain flavors seem to aggravate it more than others.. cinnamon and fruit types (although I do like em) were the worst.. Now if a juice even so much a tingles my tongue I dump it and figure maybe later on in my adventure.

I was ready to go to unflavored if I had to try and figure it out, but was not going to give up..

Not sure I helped any and know there are a lot more experienced user on here that will help you out..

I've been fortunate in that I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've had a canker sore, IF I could remember. I honestly don't think I've had one since childhood. And my late wife used to get them if the wind changed direction. There are a lot of things that can cause them. Stress, allergies, infections, hormone levels, the list goes on. The important thing to do is find what triggered YOUR canker sore and go from there.

Again, best of luck!

going on to my 3rd year vaping now, and based on my experiences, I have found whenever I used my BogeTech eliquid, I would tend to get sore spots on the inside of my lips; more often on the lower lip;
As long as I avoided that brand of liquid and stuck to halo, no sores.
