Can't get the hang of it

Hi everyone

I saw a disposable e-cig (an eTron) on offer in a shop the other day, thought I'd give it a go. On the packet it claimed that it was the same as 2 packets (being a roll-up smoker I wasn't sure how this was going to pan out). It lasted me 14 hours (that's 2 working days)! Well atleast, I assume it's run out, there's no more smoke and the red light on the end is flashing when I take a puff.

Whilst using it I noticed I was just sitting at my desk with it in my hand pretty much all day taking a puff as and when, not like when I'm outside smoking a roll-up, putting the roll-up in the ashtray and stubbing it out is all part of the smoking process, it tells me "that's it for this one".

Does anyone have any advice on how to say enough is enough with an e-cig?

Thanks

most people will vape about 3 to 4 times as much in terms of how many drags or puffs they take....the nicotine you get from vapor is much slower than you'd get with a traditional cig....

I would recommend to you that you try something other than a disposable....there are quality brands that we can point you to..based on your life style and preferences that can get you set up for about $50...

I figured disposables would be good to try it out, I wouldn't want to waste too much money on something that isn't going to work for me. And $50 is about £35 which is about 100g of tasty tobacco.

I just counted how many drags I'll take on a roll-up before it's finished, is it worth my trying taking the same on an e-cig and then putting it away? Out of sight, out of mind and all that.

This has been an issue for me too, I find I vape a lot more than I actually smoked, but only on work days. My boss gave me a word of advice about still going outside at break time to keep the ritual up and 'fool' my body into thinking it got what it needed and alleviate my having to puff away at my desk. Didn't work. LOL I just love vaping at my desk, it's like it's the 80's again. I use a lower % of nicotine at work to keep me from ODing. Not as hard at home, I have a cat and don't want to poison him so I still go outside when needed.

I didn't realize you were in the UK. Sorry about that.

Yes a disposable is a good place to start and try it out. But I just don't want you to think if you are unsatisfied with it, thats all there is.

In terms of smoking versus vaping they are just two separate things. When you drag one of your roll-ups you are going to get an instant heavy duty nicotine hit. This is probably followed by another 10 or so instant heavy duty hits.

When you vape you are getting very slow small doses.

I guess the question i have for you is....does taking more hits or puffs or whatever you call them bother you?

nicotine is sort of a self regulating drug...once the body has had its fill..you dont feel like smoking for a while....this is why people dont sit down and smoke a whole pack in 90 minutes....

if taking a lot of puffs is problematic, you could probably go up to a higher dose of nicotine...your disposable probably contains like 12 or 18 milligram strength...if you bumped it to 24mg or even 30 or 36mg you might get a bigger dose on few puffs

Not the same as cig. Need more, much slower delivery, get 36 mg nic for less vaping time. Still will be more vaping. You'll get nauseated if too much. Welcome to the world of e cigs and just go with the flow until it makes more sense and anticipate feeling a whole lot better!

Sounds like it's not something I can just "try out" then, I should probably commit myself to a day of e-cig only.

Don;t worry.....I use mine constantly......chain vape.

This could end up more expensive than smoking :/ I suppose I was also putting chain vaping in the same category as chain smoking, which I used to do when I was very engrossed in something (before my smoking outside days).

One of the reasons I wanted to try out the e-cigs is I'm fed up of going outside to smoke, my partner is not a smoker and we have a 9 month old baby, we live on 1st floor (2nd if you're American) and I feel like I'm on show when people walk by hehe

No problem, I did try to post to the UK forum first but it wouldn't let me :)

I'm willing it to give it more of a go, than just the one e-cig. It obviously works out healthier, and if it works out to save me a bit of cash then that's good, costing more is not good as my budget is already tight anyway. Number of puffs isn't really an issue, I suppose getting more nicotine than from ciggies isn't bad as there's no tar involved.

Thanks everyone for your responses :) I think the way forward is to have a whole day e-cig only, still going outside, having 10 or so puffs then putting the e-cig in a drawer or something out of sight.

I'd get a decent e-cig, even if you want cigarette sized and try some 24mg. 36mg is a bit harsh for most. It may take a little bit to get your setup right but it'l be worth it when you do.

As for puffs, I will go for long periods of nothing then long periods of constant vaping. I think it depends on the individual.

I had the same questions when I started to. and I also vape alot more than I smoked. But only because I enjot it so much more.
I love all the yummy flavors of the ejuice. I too had a disposable e cigg did Not like it at all. I finally found an awesome site (gotvapes.com) I bought the starter EgoT upgrade kit. and some juice. $70 and it was the best $ I ever spent! I love it! I didnt buy tabacco flavor juice. instead I bought strawberry, and hush flavors. they also give you two free samples with the kit. and you can choose the mill. of nicotine you want to start with. its so much better than the disposable ones. check out there web site and watch some videos. hope this is helpful to you.

That's a good point, I've got to get out of the mindset of it being the same as smoking cigarettes.

I quite like the flavour of this cheap and cheerful disposable hehe it of course wouldn't work out any cheaper to stick to them, I'll have to look at the various different UK-based sellers to see what I can find :)

I have noticed the same thing myself, that i also "chain vape" most of the time, esspecially working from a home office. My inclinations and concerns at first were also in line with this, so i did some research and it seems that as others have said its partially do to the nic intake time, and in my opinion partially the ritual sorta replaced one habbit with another, and lastly personal enjoyment.

The only down side i have noticed is if im vaping for long periods of time on a heavy heavy day my throat will seem a bit raw. Not sure if thats a good thing but its what i have noticed. i also cut down on the nic % down to 6mg but not sure if that was a good idea or not.

Put an ashtray on your desk and just put it down in it.

That's not too different to just putting it on the desk, the temptation is too great.

I think I've just got to get used to "smoking" in a different way, an 18 year habit/ritual isn't going to disappear in a day!

Uk has some nice stuff. Quite a few vapers order what they sell, high end stuff. If you do more shopping than buying and read and research until you understand. Do what it takes to find flavor that works for you. It can still get expensive but in the long run it settles down to much less. Especially if you DIY. it took me 6 months to start DIY. That is where the Tru savings start so don't sweat the initial expense too much. Think of it as paying for a class to learn how to do something and you can recoup those expenses if you watch yourself and don't go hog wild every month

Welcome to ECF, hippy2094!

Vaping is really more akin to smoking a pipe than it is to smoking a cigarette. (The nice thing about vaping, as opposed to pipe smoking, is that there is no tongue-bite from the e-liquid.) If you do nothing but smoke a pipe, it takes about half an hour to go from first light to total ash. I'm sure you've seen pipe smokers who seem to be constantly puffing all day and night long -- but they really aren't. They'll light their pipe, take a few puffs, then put it down and let it go out. Repeat, repeat, repeat all day long. By the end of 16 hours of seemingly constant puffing, they've maybe recharged their pipes five or six times. Vaping is more like that. And many of us chain-vape, simply because the rate of nicotine delivery is so low with vaping.

You've discovered that disposable cigalikes are nearly as expensive as smoking regular cigarettes. Once you have decent hardware, you'll find that your ongoing costs of vaping are vastly lower than smoking. I encourage you to investigate the offerings of some of your fine UK vendors -- Liberty Flights comes to mind, but there are lots of other ones. Many of them are ECF-approved vendors. Click on the "Forum Suppliers" tab at the top of this page. I just checked Liberty Flights: they offer a nice eGo kit (called V2) for £44.99. Except for the e-liquid and the eGo clearomizers, that hardware will last you for quite a long time. The U.S. equivalent of that kit was my first kit, and the batteries and charger continue to work just fine two years after I started vaping. Word to the wise: while you're at their website, peruse the e-liquids they offer and buy about 30 ml. of them to save on the postage. The five ml. they include won't last you very long.
